AHHHHH the red man he gave me nightmares
I played this again a couple of years ago. At one of the cut scenes near the end the Emperor has some weird giant lizard pet.
At a glace I could have sworn ‘Mentat’ said ‘Hentai’
I have the Sega Genesis version of Dune II. It was my favorite game back in the day. It still offers unique gameplay that other RTS games never did manage to replicate.
They made a mobile Dune game. Check it out.
Man 30 year. Shit im old.
*cough* SOSE *cough*
This was like the first RTS.
My Dad loved this game for years, played it when he was home, this certainly led to his obsession with Command & Conquer.
I lost him last month, and it’s things like this that get me up in the morning. Thank you, OP
You don’t know pain until you misclick and accidentally build your spaceport on rough rock rather than the nice concrete slabs. That’s an expensive mistake.
I want to play it again
I hammered this game. So exciting when you were low on funds and your harvester revealed a huge dark orange patch. I think I used to play a lot as Harkonnen and have big battalions of rocket launchers. Such a good game.
This game basically set the RTS genre as we know it today. Command and Conquer and Warcraft followed, but were marked downgrades. For example, in Dune you could build pavement tiles on which the units could move faster. You could build walls around your base, forcing enemy to destroy them slowly or go around. Once wall is built, you could build turrets on top of that wall. Wacraft did not have any of this. Harvesting in Dune was fairly risky, because you constantly had to watch harvesters, until you got your ornithopters unlocked in late-game, because sand worms would swallow them. Even crossing the sands between your base and enemy when attacking required scouting, because if you’re not careful a work can take out half your tanks before they even reach the other side. It was mind-shattering for its time.
Yes, there’s been quality of life improvements to the genre over the years, but many of them came at the price of dumbing the game down also. It’s like the difference between questing in Morrowind, and questing in Skyrim. Skyrim is more streamlined and friendly, but also dumbed down to the lowest common denominator.
Loved this game and the OG command & conquer games, man this art style just hits different
This game caused me a lot of problems. I played it so much my parents had to put a lock on the computer, that didn’t stop me haha. Those ordos harvesters are one of my fave unit models ever
This is one of the first PC games I really got into.
had some good times after stealing this and many other games from the school computers.
Never play Dune 2. But had a lot of fun playing Dune2000.
Do the Mentats in Fallout have any inspiration from or relation to this Mentat?
I loved this game when I was a kid how do I get it?!
God I sucked at this game
This game was ahead of it’s time.
Truly one of the best games ever made. To the retro PC I go to honor that birth.
Anyone ever play Dune? The game before this one? It was an RPG basically following the story of the book. You played as Paul Atreides and had to go around the planet rallying the Fremen, collecting spice, training your military, stuff like that.
Really enjoyable game, highly recommend trying it out, I think it’s available open source these days.
Has anyone in this group checked the new rts dune in early access? It’s on my radar but haven’t committed. Afraid I’ll be disappointed cause it won’t bring me close enough to this game
never played this one, but Dune 2000 is one of my favorite games of all time
oh jfc the nostalgia just stabbed me in the face were the graphics that bad?!
i can hear this picture. 😅
Played the PC and Genesis versions very often. The only think it lacked was the ability to select and command several units at once, which was corrected in “Command & Conquer” and “Dune 2000”.
Although I’d still like to see this implemented in this game. It would make things much more simple.
This was my entire summer in 1994 and 1995, playing like 10am-3pm every day
Fuuuuuh
This one was responsable for throwing me into the computer world
Thanks to it I got a lot of interest, and studied computers because of how addictive this game was.
Was obsessed with this.
If you want to run Dune II on modern hardware, the Dune Legacy client updates everything so it runs natively.
It even has functioning multiplayer <_<
Land of sand…
I miss the golden age of RTS games, with C&C, pre mmo Warcraft, Dark Reign, StarCraft, AoE… those were the days. Remember the fire ant bonus level?
I can hear the music just watching this pic…
«Worm sign»
This comment section makes me want to go get this game!
“Worm sign.”
My cousin copied this onto 5 floppy disks for me back in the day
I played the one on the Sega Genesis and became hooked.
Unfortunately the new dune game kinda sucks.
Standard setter? It was the first RTS like Wolfenstein 3d was the first FPS. It literally made a genre. Such a great game.
My first RTS and introduction to DOS.
Love this game. This game even inspired some later game makers. 🙂
