Willem Arondeus was an openly gay Dutch artist and author who joined the Dutch anti-Nazi resistance movement. He participated in the bombing of the Amsterdam public records office to hinder the Nazi German effort to identify Dutch Jews. they managed to destroy 800,000 ID cards. (1921)

Arondeus was caught and executed soon after his arrest, he refused to give up the rest of his team. Before his execution, Arondeus made a point of ensuring the public would be aware that he and two other men in the group, Bakker and Brouwer, were gay, asking either a friend or his lawyer to: “Let it be known that homosexuals are not cowards!”
He was recognised as Righteous among the Nations by Yad Vashem.
The whole group (minus one woman) was caught and arrested however. 11 of them were executed on the same day, 1 july 1943.
