I mean, I don’t get the problem with that.

I just wish more devs would focus on artistic style over maximal realism.

It’ll never be the jump from 2D to 3D, but there are lots of technologies still coming out that make insane differences. Most recently, Ray tracing was a game changer.

Edit – I’m aware Ray tracing isn’t worth the hit your performance takes, but all advancements in graphics come with the same performance issues to start. It’s still an advancement, and once the hardware is able to catch up to really show it off, something new has come out that is hyped up.

  • Critical_Hit777

Previous gen characters look great in some games, sure, but you can easily see the limitations in textures, lighting and FPS.

This next gen can definitely still make big strides forwards which will be less about screen shots and more about how it feels, the small details and performance (with quality).

Just because the change is more noticeable it doesn’t mean the other is subpar. Graphics now a days are focusing on realism: raytracing, shadows, proper facial expressions, etc.

Not really an ugly truth, whats more real than photo real? Most of the improvements are going to be in the backend to increase the fidelity. We’ve got to a near photorealism point now thanks to Ray tracing lighting, and if the matrix demo is where things are heading there really isn’t that much improvement to be had other than optimisation to get games running at 4k 60fps+.

The fact that games look so good is not an ugly truth. It’s to be celebrated. Because the changes that are now happening are deeper than simply graphics. Here’s an example: The new Forza Motorsport will factor in track conditions, tire wear, and fuel in ways games haven’t done before (as far as I know but, at the very least, this is a radical improvement).

Just because you can’t see an improvement, doesn’t mean there’s no improvement.

  • ExcelIsSuck

well duh. The closer we get to real life the harder it is to improve on the realistic side due to much more complex techniques needing to be used to give very minor changes.

Why is it a bad thing?

  • TABASCO2415

Well???? Yeah???? That’s how improvement works??? There’s only so good you can get. Photo real is the goal and we’re getting close. Once we get there that’s it. Idk where the problem is

The ugly truth – as I continue to improve at cooking, I start to have diminishing returns as far as overall taste is concerned.

Nobody in the comments is gonna point out how unfair the comparison is ? He is comparing Pre Render cutscenes to In Engine Cutscenes and giving one 15 years & other 10 years gap 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • monacoax

Mmmm. I mean, you are comparing two real time rendered images ( First and Third) with a Pre Rendered scene (second image). But yeah graphics improved a lot over time.

  • Spoghet99

What??? Wdym???? Those are 2 different scenes. Even if you still want to compare them we can see better lighting and better edge smoothing (Elie’s hair). Also Joel is not as clar in the second picture because you’re looking at him trough a window. This post does not reflect the graphics capabilities of consoles nor the devs art style

  • zfish_exe

the new generation is now focusing on light like rays and details this is chosen by the developers, to maybe bring out the emotion in the characters, like it would be easier to show emotion in the characters and make the be able to see how the character is. as you can see at the top its hard to see what he is thinking compare that to the bottom. this is just a guess tho

  • tc_spears

    Dude, your post is ridiculous.

    That’s Solid Snake from MSG1 on PS1

Then it’s the The Last Of Us remaster for PS4

And I’m assuming the TLOU remastermake(or whatever) coming for PS5

Comparing (and bemoaning) a native PS1 game to a remaster of a PS3 game and then it’s reremakerster for PS5, and also not showing it’s native PS3 version is a bit silly and disingenuous.

  • read_again2

TLoU is the wrong example. The graphics are already advanced enough that we can notice all the slightest changes. However, in modern games, you need to pay attention to places of secondary and tertiary importance.

    – The backdrops of the locations have become more elaborate and beautiful, various things that are not striking have become more elaborate, the characters have more facial expressions.

    – Locations can now be bigger thanks to new hardware powers.

    – In addition, the entertainment component has advanced a lot. A great example is the Demon’s Souls remake, which has turned into a virtual 4D cinema, making the most of the PS5’s tactile and audio components.

The problem is not that the new consoles differ little from the previous ones, but that developers do not actively use these differences and advantages.

How is this the ugly truth? This should be the known truth.. the closer you get to “real” the harder it is to “improve”.

  • canad1anbacon

Plenty of others things still have a very long way to go. Destruction and physics have been stagnant since the PS3 gen

Stuff like AI reactions and interaction, fire and water simulation, lighting, world density, crowd simulation, animations, are all stuff i am super excited to see improvements in this gen

  • PAROV_WOLFGANG

You’re comparing apples to apples here. Look at Unreal engine 5 and make the same statement. You can’t.

  • motionbutton

This is a poor comparison.. graphics are more than just a picture. It’s body mechanics, environments effecting characters and other objects, etc..

  • Brownlw657

The difference between those later 2 generations is now cutscenes are in real time rather than a pre render. This means it’s completely accurate to the graphics of the gameplay and it is able to smoothly transition between both gameplay and cutscenes. The difference in technology between generations now will not likely be graphics, but size and speed. We’ll be seeing games in 10 years not having any loading screens at all. None between cutscenes, loading into the game, or going into seperate parts of the map. For example, the mod open city’s skyrim, except it’s every single building and cave and dungeon. That’s most likely where technology will be going.

A great looking dumpster fire is still a dumpster fire, even if one has surprise exploding rats that burst into confetti.

Grip me with story/gameplay first, dazzle me with visual/sounds second.

  • thewildcardbb1

Actually feel like this is pretty bogus.

We’ve had improvements on all sorts of areas. Still images of hand picked titles don’t really do justice.

Our picture technology has improved drastically with 4K, HDR, OLED.

It’s smoother with 120hz+ available now. As opposed to like less than 20 on n64 and PS1 often.

Look at Apex. You drop in to a huge battlefield all at once and can see the entire map. That was a pipedream back then. You ever wonder why there was so many elevators in doom, Wolfenstein, half life. They were all easy loading points.

We have serious mocap. Check out resident evil village scenes where they have sensors on everyone and they are acting it out for the cutscenes. Actually just go look at images of resident evil village vs PS1 RE in general for a grasp on how much better graphics have come

You’re talking massive strides to realism. Once you finally reach realistic you can’t get more realistic.

The Last of Us was realistic even on the ps3. You’re also talking the same game which will make their sequels look similarly intentionally. A valid comparison would be a new ps5 character. But still, so very realistic with just the ps3 game, I doubt you’d see much more realism.
