You can see these models for another 8 days at the Ray Harryhausen exhibition in Edinburgh!
Those skeletons were careful at first but then they were all, “LEEEEEEROY JENKINS!”
I remember watching this movie with my dad when i was little, still an exciting scene with a nice dose of nostalgia
A real WOW for this kid back in the day. I only ever saw it on BW tv late at night and never knew it was in color.
I managed to see these models at a film Expo years ago.
These and the medusa were both a massive part of my childhood
Is this OG stop motion?
They are about to be in a glam rock music video and they don’t even know it
for a 1963 movie this looks quite impressive!
I see this and the first thing that comes to my mind is playing Golden Axe.
Is that guy the priest from the beginning of The
Fifth Element?
This is what 3 inches of blood made that song about…
Although impressive, you can see that this was clearly a rip off (or at least heavily inspired by) the Raimi classic ‘The Army of Darkness’
*^(/s)*
I bet fighting skeletons are easier then humans, the must have so much less weight with only bones.
But then they get there strength from magic or something as they don’t have muscles so maybe they are stronger but would it add weight?
hard to know, and humans would probably get tired but not the skellies.
So you would need to destroy them completely for them to stop fighting like grind them to dust
I would love to see a modern film where they use these older techniques but with modern technology to create the effects.
Those skeleton monsters killed Dennis Reynolds!
This style of animation still holds up so well!
What kind of hat is the mage wearing? Does it have a name?
Scene was awesome though. I used to enjoy watching Clash of the Titans as a kid. I Love a good stop motion. Sometimes even bad stop motion.
I saw this at school in like grade three. It was literally epic
I saw a skeleton go down from being gut stabbed. Not to take anything away from this amazingly done scene, but what exactly is the damage that you are inflicting stabbing a Skelton in the gut?
For 1963, these effects are really good.
Sick special effects for 1963
This is like DBZ, everyone stands around for 5 minutes as the antagonist powers up.
I remember loving this moving as a kid. The skeletons were mind-blowing back then.
My thoughts as I was watching this:
1. Harryhausen is awesome
1. Why are Jason and Co. just standing there while the necromancer sower is casually planting the undead?
1. Necromancer dude threw way more than seven seeds. Were some of them duds?
1. Again, Harryhausen is awesome.
1. Jason lived because he played D&D. At the end he switched to using a shield and a spear as a staff. He knows that bludgeoning damage bypasses the skeletons DR.
1. I should do a Harryhausen marathon
Jason and the Argonauts, Clash of the Titans, and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger were three of my favs growing up. And The 7th/Golden Voyage of Sinbad, with the 7th being even older than this, are good too and for some reason I always associate these films with each other (Clash, Jason, Sinbad, etc.)
Jason and the Argonauts is just great; haven’t seen it in over a decade, though. Last time I watched it was like 2007-2008, maybe 8-9. Giant piece of nostalgia for me, first time I saw it was like 2004 or something. Crazy dose of nostalgia.
To kill a Zombie, you chop off the head/brain; to kill a Vampire, you push them into sunlight; to kill a Werewolf, you use a… silver bullet? But how do you kill Skeletons?
Edit: Apparently >!you jump off a cliff into the ocean as they can’t swin, lmao!!<
Why am I watching this? I can’t turn away.
Was anyone else waiting for “spooky scary skeletons” to start playing? 🤣😂🤣😂
FRIGGIN BONIES
The bones are their dollars! So are the worms! They’ll pull your hair… up not out.
This terrified me as a kid. Even the sound effects were scary
What amazes me most is that at one point, he grabs a spear from a skeleton.
The bones are their money!!
Superb. Just amazing. Love all his effects and films.
Classic, I love Harryhausen
Better than lots of cgi nowadays.
The priest guy looks just like the priest at the beginning of the fifth element, John Bennet
This was far ahead of its time. What a movie
Sometimes I prefer Stop Motion over CGI, this is one of these moments.
Also the restaurant in Monsters Inc is called Harryhausen’s.
This terrified me as a little kid.
Amongst my circle of friends, we still use the phrase “they’ve gone a bit Jason and the Argonauts” to describe someone who has lost too much weight. We’re in our 50’s now. This scene had an unimaginable impact on people. Those FX are absolutely fantastic.
