That’s cool as shit
*points revolver at staff*
“Now get in the plane!”
The Hercules. “Spruce Goose” was the nick name/insult favored by the press and Mr. Hughes’s detractors.
Basically a gamer
“Guys, let’s break for a few minutes so I can urinate in a milk jug.”
Hah loser! Can’t even fly it out from his mom’s basement.
We’ll take the Spruce Moose! Hop in!
I saw the real thing in Long Beach when I was a kid. So big it didn’t even look real.
I would like a full size cockpit for my tiny R/C planes
I wonder what happened to the RC version.
*Airhog!*
I liked the Eccentric billionaires of the 50’s/60’s more than the ones we have now.
That is very cool.
…before the neuroticisms kicked in. He’s missing the Guinness Book of World Record finger nails and Kleenex boxes on his feet!
“Excellent!”
I was excited to see this pic because of how reclusive Hughes was, then realized you can’t even see his face.
This feels very Elon Musk.
The first flight sim.
The Hipster’s Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos.
Wasting a vast amount of resources on a stupid vanity project *before* it was cool.
Microsoft flight simulator 1942.
I love how everyone in this era always wore formal wear. Going to the beach. Swimsuit? Shorts? Hawaiian shirt? No, formal dress pants, shoes, shirt, and tie.
Want to do down to the beach and play with the RC boatplane?
Sure, i’ll get the forklift.
Was this one of the first RC planes? That remote set up for back then is intense!
The plywood pelican
Not pictured: Jars of his own urine.
Rate my setup.
First gamer rig/chair right there
Get in Smithers
“Flying Boat” you mean a plane?
Anyone know where this took place.
Looks like Balboa Bay in Newport Beach, CA?
The Spruce Goose, the largest plane in the world back then, flew only once, for a mile, at 70 feet above the water off the Port of Long Beach, CA. It is now in a museum in McMinnville, Oregon.
Line between genius and madness blurred yet again. By then he was starting to lose it.
Umm, I ordered the *large* RC console.
Not the Spruce Goose (Hughes Hercules) so likely not Howard Hughes. The Spruce Goose had eight engines, plane in photo has four. Hard to tell but the tall vertical tail looks a bit like the Convair R3Y Tradewind, and the area in the photo does look like the area around Mission Bay in San Diego.
Sick of the repetitive posts…
I bet he had men carry him down in that contraption so he wouldn’t get dirty
Took my kids to see the inside of the real thing it is pretty dang impressive.
