You either get classic in the form of StarCraft 2 or modern in the form of CoH 3.
Personally I’m tired of classic micro and RTS. AoE 4 really showed how that system has aged with build orders and just scouting or gambling build orders and economy. I think squad-based and position-based is the future.
I would’ve loved Settlers to become a legit entry since logistics-based RTS is super cool, but the new one is apparently a complete failure already.
I really want a CoH with a 2010ish setting. Generals is the only thing that came with that setting.

I still regularly play Red Alert 2. Just going through the motions of defeating AI bases, but it just doesn’t stop being fun to send in two dozen fighter jets to annihilate whatever was standing there!

I’d love a modern / Cold War setting Company of Heroes, basically a new Generals with a more sophisticated engine / gameplay (ie an assault rifle can’t take out a tank). I like the drama / intensity that comes with slightly smaller scale skirmishes than the likes of Wargame and other modern-setting RPGs where it feels like your organising a spreadsheet rather than commanding a battle.
There’s a new AOE came out last year. Might try that?
