“Seize the gap” refers to merging lanes, not driving with space in front. Leaving space, particularly at high speeds or in traffic, is both safer and alleviates traffic for everyone by avoiding the slinky effect of merges and braking without enough space. Not to mention it makes merging actually possible. Don’t be shitty to people leaving space instead of tailgating at 90mph because it feels like that extra space might somehow get you to where you’re going faster (it won’t).
