for the last time: spotify does not pay artists. at all. they pay labels, who then in turn pay artists. how labels choose to divvy up that money is entirely up to them.

if atlantic records wants to pay ed sheeran $5m extra using the share of the revenue smaller artists signed to them had made, simply to convince ed sheeran to continue with atlantic records, **they can do that**. but it’s none of spotify’s business.

the issue isn’t what spotify pays artists, they have a very simple cost to them: 70% of revenue goes to rights holders (i.e. labels). the issue is the labels. **WE’VE KNOWN THIS FOR A LONG TIME**. the fact that labels have been able to obscure their notoriety for being predatory by pointing their finger at streaming services and everyone is just going along with it, is insane to me.

You’re all gonna hate me but the rate spotify pays is fair (avg of $0.0035 per stream). Why? Because it’s all the money coming into it minus spotify’s 30% commission. If more people had paid subscriptions then the pool would be larger and the artists would be paid more per stream. You can argue that their cut of 30% is too large but that’s the only place more money can go to the artists, spotify can’t just “create” money to pay more.

Also back in the day, when you were played on radio and made money it was about the same. You had to have millions of listeners for it to generate good money. The equivalent of a band having a million streams is the equivalent of being played on a small regional station quite a few times or a major one once. In short, you wouldn’t be rich and famous, just like 1M streams makes.

There are so many indie artists making absolute bank on there now, just look at one you like and see their monthly listeners, if it’s 10M they’re making an avg of $35,000 USD per month.

Oh, I thought there is some kind of “Weird AI”, as in “Artificial Intelligence”… I should spend less time on the internet.

It’s cute that people are bringing up how much Apple or Tidal pays per 1m streams, and comparing it to Spotify. Do those other services have a free tier? No? Then how is that a fair comparison?

    Don’t take away money

    From artists just like me

How else can I afford another solid gold Humvee?

    And diamond-studded swimming pools,

These things don’t grow on trees!

So all I ask is everybody, please…

It’s amazing that guy has so much staying power as a parody musician. He’s one of a kind and always good for a laugh.

I really hope he gets a nice sandwich.

Try and support the music you listen to through any other means besides your favorite streaming service, buy their Vinyl’s, merch, see their shows. See if they provide alternative digital purchasing options and add it to your Spotify library that way.

This was really weird seeing this on Spotify, within the Spotify app. Like I know it’s humor, but it would seem like something Spotify wouldn’t want on its own app, a criticism of its business practices.

    Pay the artists, Spotify.
