Dennis Quaid was also amazing as Doc Halliday in Wyatt Earp, but he was overshadowed by the bigger role Kilmer had in Tombstone.

I watched this a few times as a kid, and I remembered liking it but nothing else. I convinced my wife to sit down and watch it with me, and we loved every second of it.

The only problem I had was the romance scenes were not written very well.

The friendships and relationships between the men aren’t toxic at all which is impressive for a 90’s movie. Had gay characters that weren’t made to be villainous or a joke, which again, impressive for a 90’s movie.

And it’s so quotable. Everything from the badass, through funny, and ending at wholesome.

My wife and I have been joking for weeks about showing up some place where no one knows you, beating the shit out of a guy and then basically stepping into his job.

said before in another comment regarding tombstone:

This might not be the best western ever, but because of Doc, it is definitely my favorite western ever.

and the best line imo —
“Hell ive got a lot of friends”
    Doc: “I dont”

its a shame this movie wasn’t made today. with how much they capitalize on every money making opportunity we would have gotten a full Doc Holiday prequel series and I would have loved every minute of it.

Don’t buy into the bullshit that he says huckle bearer he plainly says huckleberry in the scene when he says I’ll be your huckleberry.

The [accent preparation](https://www.slashfilm.com/1128901/val-kilmer-had-a-secret-weapon-working-on-tombstone/) was an interesting detail:

    > “I started with my secret weapon, the dialect and speech coach Tim Monich who works with the best people on earth, 24/7 for 30 years now. I told him I needed a dialect that didn’t exist anymore and within days, there was a tape at my doorstep of a true Southern aristocrat who spoke so slowly and precisely about the theater he had restored.”

“ You ain’t no Daisy. You ain’t no Daisy at all!”

” The irony was more than he could bear. “ or something like that.

Kilmer absolutely elevates this movie in so many ways. Without him it’s a solid western that wouldn’t have been overly memorable. With him it’s brilliant and iconic.

Kurt Russell just can’t find an ounce of chemistry with either of his love interests in this film and both those plot lines feel completely pointless and extra curricular to the film.

Other than that good performances across the board and good casting choices.

The change in Johnny Ringo’s character from suave and intelligent gun duelist to raging lunatic is not well done and out of character.

Val Kilmer just knocks it out of the park in absolutely every scene and truly brings the character to life. He is phenomenal in this movie to the extent that the movie feels like it’s missing something in nearly every scene he isn’t in.

I saw Tombstone in theaters when I was 15 five times just for his performance. It’s funny to see this come up every other week on Reddit how someone says this exact same thing. His performance has stood the test of time and the Oscars should make an award for performances they missed, starting with this one.

The fact that Val Kilmer didn’t win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor (he wasn’t even nominated- Tommy Lee Jones won it for The Fugitive that year) is such garbage. This, combined with the fact that Saving Private Ryan lost the Best Picture oscar to fucking **Shakespeare in Love** in 1998 is proof that movie awards are complete and utter bullshit.

I see Val Kilmer in Tombstone and I upvote. The man was robbed a supporting actor Oscar that year. My children don’t Love westerns much but boy do they share this old man’s love of this movie. Stellar performance just stellar!

My best version of Doc, he wasn’t a good guy but he was a loyal friend.

I loved this exchange in the movie.

VERMILLION: “Then why in hell’re you doin’ This? You ought to be in bed.”

DOC: “Wyatt Earp is my friend.”

VERMILLION: “Hell, I got lots of friends”

    DOC: “I don’t”
