Doesn’t look like a formal mine more like the residue of mine and she is Scavenging trying to find something to make their lives better
Pakistan – child and orphan coal miners –

Syrian child oil workers – Oil, too.https://www.arte.tv/en/videos/104498-000-A/arte-reportage/
And used in.. Tires, oil refinement, piant and other things.
Oh, and not in some new batteries – already in some EV’s now.
Sounds like one of those ” You’ll never take my lifted truck” posts.
One of the reasons why Apple products shouldn’t have a life of 5 years before being retired and considered obsolete.
Edit: Apple was just an example. Yes, everything degrades over time, there’s a natural wear and tear to things. My point was the forced obsoletion of devices with charging cords for example and the lack of recyclability and amount of waste in the process. There’s a lot wrong with the industry, such as child labor and corporate greed. For the price, toxic waste, and exploitation of labor, I don’t want to keep buying into the industry; even if it’s only about every 5 years or so.
And my teenagers b*tch about putting away their laundry…
Source?
don’t like it? stop using electronics. want better? maybe you should vote. stop letting corporations continue to exploit record profits while doing the bear minimum for workers.
Each new day is another day to be more ashamed of being human
And here I am sitting in a delicious food court thing, with a bahn mi in one hand and some Thai food on the way, waiting for the Mario kart game to open up… Shit I shouldn’t feel so down some days.
What she’s doing is actually illegal as well (:
And the fact that every baby in Finland also uses a cardboard box as a crib is inconsequential…
Why would this woman force her baby to dig for cobalt from a cardboard box?
/s
I’m curious what assumptions people are making from this photo and the title of the post.
You missed the orange bucket in the background – they’re digging for oil
You know, I’m not arguing that these shitty conditions don’t exist; but it’s kind of odd that all of a sudden these pictures are everywhere with anywhere from subtle to direct digs at sustainable tech and EVs.
Ok, shitty mining conditions exist: should we go back to gasoline?
There is so much wrong with those 19 words I don’t even know where to start unpacking that.
Thank you.
The exploitation of the African people is despicable
Well duh where else is she gonna put it? On the ground
Great to live in DR Congo where it seems to be the best option. Infuriating!
There are some wild takes in these comments. You can support EV vehicles/Tech and condemn modern slavery at the same time. Lots of articles about these situations in the Congo. Turns out Chinese mining companies don’t have great labor standards in African nations.
4830 batteries are cobalt free
No source with pic, off to a no go start
As I sit here looking at this on my battery operated device this got more depressing.
So what you’re saying is she has childcare facilities at work?
Hey, did you know what coal mining did to Appalachia?
Ok so a portion of cobalt comes from impoverished people mining it. And it’s the vast minority that comes from these sources. They obviously cannot extract the amounts a professional large scale mining operation can.
What’s happens to them when you take the opportunity to mine cobalt away from them ?
That cardboard box becomes a coffin I’d say….
I wonder what they would say if you said we’re stopping you from mining cobalt….
Well, try not to have another baby. I need another Tesla. That cobalt isn’t gonna dig itself
/s
Nothing wrong with cardboard box for infants.
We used a “baby box” for both of our kids for a bit when they first came home from hospital. Very safe, nowhere to get caught on or go face down and suffocate.
Once they had grown a bit and were out of the danger zone (could roll themselves) we moved to a real crib.
This mom may not have that luxury but this won’t harm the baby in itself (not judging about mom working in a mine or the conditions there).
Wonder what would she have done if there’s no cobalt to mine there…
Joe rogans recent podcast with Siddharth Kara is well worth a listen.
She should have hired an au pair to sit with the child on the mezzanine I assume?
A source would be nice….
Unfortunately it’s because it’s literally the only job available in there.
I love how all of a sudden people are caring about this kind of thing. As a means of attacking EV’s.
Because rare earth minerals for everything else don’t get extracted in a similar manner in some cases?
You can be pro EV’s and against modern slavery. You just gotta be consistent with your actual values.
Cobolt is used to refine gasoline, but sure, keep spreading this dumb misinformation like we learnt nothing from 4 years of Donald Fake News
I wonder how many people in this thread know that cobalt is used to refine oil to make gasoline.
I thought Cobalt was used for making gasoline too? And many other applications, but let’s blame the cleaner tech shall we?
God bless them and I know this is super fucked up to say but why have kids and bring them into this poverty?
I often take my kids to the river. When they were babies, I’d build like a small bed from pebbles or sand, put a blanket over it, and rest them there while I fished. I wonder if someone got a pic of me, and they could post it, “American man places baby on rocks while foraging for food.”
So let’s figure it out, the cringe is she is putting the baby in a cardboard box, or she is forced to child labor, or that she is a child with a baby?
Yeah, but she’s saving the planet so…,
So if they weren’t digging for whatever what would they be doing seems that they are thankfull to have a job so they can make money to support there family I don’t see the problem and they let her bring her kids to work
There is cobalt in the phone you are using to comment on this post.
Right above this is a post about how damn healthy and fashionable Ring Starr is looking these days with his millions of fucking dollars.
People are so stupid.
