The worst decision Microsoft ever made was removing this… Or maybe the Zune.

Eh, with the widespread availability of internet and mobile gaming, I consider these Windows games to be less relevant. I was around playing SkiFree and Solitaire and the like back then, but I’m fine with them just being memories of a bygone era.
The game was reverse engineered and the source code [released on GitHub](https://github.com/k4zmu2a/SpaceCadetPinball).
You can find builds in the Release section, or play in your browser [here](https://alula.github.io/SpaceCadetPinball/).
Kids!
I had SkiFree and Rodents Revenge
Lmao in recent years I’ve never been more happy to have copied that game and had it on every windows pc since
So awesome. When you couldn’t pick a game on windows xp there was always pinball 🙂
They didn’t remove it by choice, there was a big in converting it to 64bit that couldn’t be resolved. They tried and I’ve seen a YouTube video about the bug but i can’t recall what it was though.
There are some excellent pinball games it there though, i personally recommend Psycho Pinball on the Mega Drive, emulators are easy to obtain, i personally recommend Kega Fusion.
The Zune lasted longer than the Confederacy
Zune was the shit.
You can [compile it yourself from here](https://github.com/k4zmu2a/SpaceCadetPinball), you just need to add the assets manually (I found them pretty quick with a google search). This can even be compiled/executed on linux.
I had recently on HN that they didn’t add it into more recent windows versions due to licensing restrictions
Are you saying the Zune was a mistake? I had a couple zunes and I loved them, and any time I talk to someone who had one they loved it as well.
Full disclosure: I was the hardware test engineer for Zune.
I’ve come to the conclusion that anyone that doesn’t like zune was just pissed it wasn’t an ipod. I still have my zune and use it regularly to this day, it far outlived two ipod videos that I owned
Bob
Have you seen Windows 11?
Before Minecraft there was Minesweeper
Man I fucking loved my Zune. Thought it was infinitely superior to iPods. Zune computer software was fantastic too.
Uhh…freeware games have been around since video games existed.
I got a Halo Zune on clearance from Kmart for like $30. It was awesome!
I’ve played this hours and hours
Don’t you disrespect cool math games
Not including minesweeper way bigger hit to me…

Naw, SkiFree and Sim Ant.
I loved my zune! I was less than impressed with my ipod touch when I replaced it(can’t remember why I had to replace) but that ipod was the only apple product I’ve ever owned.
I genuinely think that the dumbest decision windows made were:
a) Their handling of skype
b) The terrible, half-implemented UI changes
c) Ads in their OS/software
I was so disappointed when my PC updated to Vista and this gem was replaced with Purble Place.
3D Pinball was made by Maxis, believe it or not. That’s right, the guys who made SimCity and the Sims and were later slowly strangled to death by EA while the execs jerked off to their slowly dying gasps while relaxing in a giant bowl of jello with money instead of fruit made this game.
And this is why I love Computer subject back then. Hahaha!
I wish they had kept [Hover!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hover!) around too
I had Minesweeper and Solitaire.
This game was so satisfying
the game released before roblox but roblox released before zune
Here i am still playing minesweeper
Audiophiles loved the Zune. I still have 2 of the 30gig models somewhere around here.
They also removed Solitaire and the other card games. They added the “Microsoft Solitaire Collection” instead which plays unskippable ads and wants you to pay a subscription. I was like WTF.
I still have my Zune! The blocky original one too!
Zune was amazing. 15 bucks a month, unlimited songs, unlimited downloads and you get to keep 10 songs per month forever.
Most pay Spotify nearly that much but do they liked you keep any songs? Nope.
