I love this song and I have never seen a live version. This sounds great
The best road trip song to ever exist.
Dammit, now the song is stuck in my head just from scrolling by this post despite not having heard it in years. Thanks a lot.
Perfect rendition of the song, can’t believe it’s 34 years old!
If you listen to the short interview afterward, Letterman is *really* struggling to understand their Scottish accents at first (as was I).
*Wow.. John Carmack along with his self created clone, singing this great song before working on & becoming the master of Doom.*
Why didn’t Fitbit use this in their ads?
Does everyone else just belt it out at the top of your lungs when it comes on the radio? Nah, I don’t do that either.
It’s unusual for an accent to come through their singing voices so much. Great timbre. And encourages those without good singing voices to belt it out with them.
Saw them in an outdoor concert near the water, sun was setting, and a couple thousand people all jumping in sync. It was fantastic.
the “water of leith” is such a nice path to walk along in Edinburgh
from about 2000 onwards the drunk brit version of this song chorus consists of shouting “YOU’RE A WANKER!” at friends enemies players opposing fans as appropriate.
Wow, they played this on Letterman four years before Benny and Joon came out when the song exploded in popularity.
Their latest album is pretty dang good.
I unironically love that album. I first heard this song off of a movie soundtrack that my friend had. My mom bought me their actual album and I truly love every bit of it
This is great. I saw them on this tour in Montreal in a small club in 89. They were great!
A great live version of a classic song 👍
I’ve never seen this performed outside of Scotland and its *so weird* seeing someone struggle to say leith!
Saw them 3 weeks ago and glad to say all these years later they are still cracking…..saw them at Edinburgh Playhouse which is a few hundred meters from the picture on that album. Some people lose their voice a touch, but they were still awesome. It was the night of England vs France and half the crown cheered when France scored!
The entire album this is on is fantastic. Was reissued last year with an outtakes LP on vinyl – the outtakes and demos show you how much work went into polishing the arrangements that make the album cuts such absolute PERFECTION. It’s in constant rotation at my house.
Saw these at Isle of Wight last year, absolutely fantastic
Fun fact: at the end of David Tennants run as the Doctor, he did a singing sign off to this song with the cast.
This is my number 1 go to Karaoke song.
It’s extremely catchy and you don’t need to be able to sing for shit to deliver an awesome performance.
Since absolutely every person alive knows the general chorus, you can also include the audience in the performance which just gets people wild!
Guitarist had an early man bun.
1989 was max denim
This just goes to show that Letterman’s band were some mother fuckers. They sounds WAY better than the studio version, and probably rehearsed it once. Tight as fuck and groovy with a great feel. Some serious pros up there
I was once walking downtown in my city and heard a band singing 500 Miles. I thought to myself “I wonder who is covering this”, turns out it was the Proclaimers playing an open air show. That was fun.
