growing up in Canada in the early 80’s the monks were this band ([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Monks_(UK_band)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Monks_(UK_band))) and they were sooo popular here (I suspect it was the humour, see bare naked ladies band, which might be why they were so ignored in the UK). Fast forward a few decades and I google monks and this fabulous, strange, in germany only apparently, american band appears.
Their Black Monk Time is such a time capsule of mid-60’s rock. Also worth a listen is Pretty Suzanne with the great recurring line: Please, please, love me. Why don’t you love me?
is this the 1st punk band?
At first I was like proto-punk??? Bah, it’s just garage. Then the chorus hit, and I immediately hear a The Fall song that does exactly the same thing. Can’t quite dredge up the name though.
Edit:
It’s “Black Monk Theme (Part 2)” sensibly enough. I think that it is pretty much a cover.

They were kind of the modern equivalent of a *boy band*. Their management shaped their look and sound.
They were Americans stationed in Germany, a fairly traditional rock band (still good tho), and they got scooped up by some artist-producers who came up with all these cool ideas – the religious overtones, shaving their heads like monks, encouraging them to make some really far out avant-garde arrangements.
Kick-ass band. One of my favorites. But it’s pretty fascinating when you peek behind the curtain. There’s a great documentary that I think restored the footage you see above.
If I remember correctly the documentary is, [The Transatlantic Feedback](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monks:_The_Transatlantic_Feedback).
I don’t understand how this is considered proto punk. Are The Who considered proto punk?
God i love the Monks
Haven’t played this yet, but I’m a Monks fan. I believe these were the U.S. military guys stationed in Germany.
So good!!!
Made my day!!
