I miss the Timmverse. The animated movies come close but aren’t the same for me. What I would give if they could do something like this again, multiple animated series interconnected that deliver both amazing solo and team-up adventures.
Why does this child have a receding hairline?
The Demon Slayer scene when Tanjiro sees his family still alive in his dream controlled by the train demon always reminded me of this episode.
DC’s cartoons are the closest thing to perfect comic book adaptations.
DCAU > MCU
Its really frustrating that there is such a great series with examples for exactly how to use DC characters… and the WB shits out the worst superhero movies ever made.
If Gunn can be half as good as this, the DCU’S days will be Bright.
Wait…what!? I didn’t know the old animated universe adapted any Moore, let alone that he liked it!?! Do you have sauce on him saying that? Its just so hard for me to believe.
The most heartbreaking part of the Justice League (and Unlimited) series remains for me the death of Superman, episodes 45 and 46. I know what’s coming every time, of course, but it doesn’t matter. Episode 45 makes me cry like seriously nothing else I’ve seen or read. It feels like the loss of all heart and all hope, and I just weep.
It’s amazing that of all the adaptations of his work, this is the only one he really liked. Speaks to the quality of the old school DCAU that they could do in a half hour episode what big budget cinema could not (though in fairness Moore is a bit of a curmudgeon). It could have been just another Saturday morning cartoon… and it was, but it was also so much more.

Fun fact: Mongul’s voice in this episode is done by Julia Roberts’s older brother Eric.
This episode is one of best, if not the best, episodes that carried the Batman animated series drama to the JLA. The Grundy episode when he gets resurrected and the JLA can’t stop him is another. If the DCU could only do this type of story telling.

Dumb question but why does Superman just punch over and over? Are the laser vision and frost breath not useful in combat?
Arguably the best episode of the series. Fantastic writing for a kids show

My favourite part of this episode as someone with a dark sense of humour is when they go into Batman’s mind and he’s cheering as his dad just beats the shit out of the mugger (Joe Chill?).
Batman is portrayed very well in the DCAU as someone in control and generally believes people can change. But dream kid Bruce is just pure “Put him in a bodybag!”

An old coworker of mine told me about this scene about 5 years ago. I’ve always thought about it because he said it was weirdly dark and profound. This is the first time I’ve seen this and yeah, I’d say she was right.
