It’s crazy to me that she died so young. 46 and drowning drunk in a bathtub just seems nuts. It’s even crazier that she was supposed to record the Zombie cover with Bad Wolves the next day.

While watching things like these I always get worried that the band is secretly hating the fact they’re going to ‘have to play the hits’ again 🙁 But she looks like she’s genuinely enjoying herself – so.. that’s good.

I was fortunate enough to get to see them on the “To The Faithful Departed” tour.

It was the first concert I went to without any parents present. They put on a phenomenal show.

Another talented artist we lost far before their time.

I consider Linger one of the greatest heartbreak songs of all time. Whereas most songs of its genre wallow in sorrow over losing the person you love or bitterness towards someone who treated you wrong, Linger takes it to a whole other level. The first verse is the standard, “You’re deceitful, manipulative,” all the usual sad song stuff, but then it gets to the chorus: “But I’m in so deep, you know I’m such a fool for you…” There’s this moment of self-realization, that even though he’s a prick, she’s going to keep going along with it anyway, and the self-awareness that she isn’t strong enough to back away, until she’s begging him to end it because she knows she can’t.

It’s so raw, so… uncool. None of this, “I’m gunna find someone else, you’re gunna be miserable without me” posturing, just a pathetic pleading: “Do you have to? Do you have to? Do you have to?” It’s such a perfect encapsulation of young sorrow, of true heartbreak with no way out. One of my favorite songs.

Can we get a shout out for Bob Boilen and the tiny desk people? These concerts belong in the Library of Congress.

There’s a video of her on some French like young talent type casting session when she must have been barely 18, just nailing a Fleetwood Mac rendition IIRC.

    She was so talented.

The Cranberries – No Need to Argue was the first ever compact disc I owned by choice (previously, my aunt bought me All-4-One against my wishes).

I still love it. I can listen to that album front to back and be instantly transported right back to fifth grade. I wanted it for “Zombie” but grew to love it for “I Can’t Be With You”, “Dreaming My Dreams”, “Ode to My Family”, and pretty much every other track.

Thank you for that post. With everything going on in the world right now I had to go listen to Warchild after watching this. I remember seeing them live on SNL.

One of my favorite Tiny Desk concerts! This particular performance of Linger is even better than the studio version
