Nice update 👍
I went from “what is this bs hipster nonsense?” to “holy crap this is amazing, I want one”
Impressive
We all know one person who’s getting that thing
Seriously, genius!!!
Awesome
Looks cool but so unpractical
This thing is so cool, I just might endure picking up all the calls telling me the IRS has frozen my social security number, and that the police are on their way if I don’t go and buy Steam gift cards.
Such a weird idea and concept. On paper the idea seems kind of crazy, but the design is so brilliantly realized that you can’t help being impressed, and also kind of wanting one.
Ok this might be too meta. But could I “technically” build a small game on the e-reader display on the back? Like snake?! If so, I’m out on this smart phone game.
I’m glad I watched that, because if I saw someone pull that thing out cold and just start using it with no prior knowledge, I would probably choke on my beer and straight up die on the sidewalk.
This woman has restored my faith in humanity.
I remember that original video and being amazed with her. Now I am even more amazed by her. Holy shit is she brilliant! This is so awesome.
Very cool. One thing I’d have done differently is using larger switches, maybe even knobs like on walkie-talkies. You can see the designer struggling to operate them with fingernails, and in one case using needle nose tweezers.
“I’m not a programmer” writes new code… FML I’m stupid.
On the one hand, this is the most absurdly hipster thing ever.
But I do want to at least appreciate that this could very easily have been made as a poorly designed, mass produced piece of junk that sold on hipster-novelty alone and broke after 3 months. Instead, it’s been carefully designed and prototyped, and the designer has open sourced the project. Not only that, but she’s selling kits for those who aren’t able to source all the components themselves.
Words cannot express how much I do not want to own one of these things. But if I can think of a single friend who’d enjoy one as a gift, I’ll probably grab them a kit just to support work like this.
I’m a little bit tempted by this. Only things holding me back are that it’s relatively expensive (especially as if have to get it shipped to the UK) and SMS support is very limited. If I could more easily send and receive texts I’d be very tempted indeed…
Just Wow, amazing
As a gen x type, I love this project because of the nostalgia factor. It’s so silly but fun though. Rotary phones were dumb but there’s also something nice about the tangible feel of spinning the dial and it clicking back.
I love women like this who can make cool stuff.
Its an amazing idea and the execution is great, but I dont believe any of you who say you want one. There is no way you guys are going to use that thing in your day to day life.
This is really cool and impressive that she did all the work on that, including the design, coding, and 3D printing herself. Just incredible.
This is absolutely amazing. As a 55-year old I vividly remember using our one rotary dial phone as a kid. We would dial 7 numbers for local and for long distance we would dial “1” than the 10 digit number. I am curious as to whether you considered just watching for the “1” rather than adding a whole other slider for local?
Saw this somewhere thinking it was an easily available product and almost got it for my 70-something dad who was holding on to his flip phone for dear life and swearing off smartphones. Then he amazed all of us by getting an iPhone.
It’s neat but you actually have to talk to people with that phone.
Awesome ingenuity!
So cool! I remember seeing the first video and the follow up was worth the wait. Might snag one for an Xmas gift
Wait….don’t you have to dial even local numbers as 10 digit now a days?
Back in 2012 I came up with a great hipster idea for an app that would be a rotary dial for your smartphone. I looked up the App Store and found 50 such apps. Sad. My millions of dollars were never meant to be.
she sure has some big mits on her
neat
