It’s crazy to think about what that moment must be like for the raccoon. You’re just a little guy, out looking for food, wander into someone’s yard and see all the flakes coming down through the floodlight. Is it having fun trying to catch them? Does it understand what they are?

also racoon, “small plantigrade carnivorous quadruped,” common in the warmer parts of North America, c. 1600, arocoun, from Algonquian (Powhatan) arahkun, from arahkunem “he scratches with the hands.” Early forms included Capt. John Smith’s raugroughcum. In Norwegian, vaskebjørn, literally **”wash-bear,”** from its habit of dipping its food in water before eating it.

The Native American word literally translates to: “he scratches with the hands.” and the Nordic, vaskebjørn **”wash-bear”**
