I still have a shirt I got there in 2004.
Played by Alan Rickman in the movie “CBGB”
I got to go there once in it’s last year in business. Got to see a waitress slap the shit out of a customer. Good times.
terrible that it’s gone
Legend.
RIP CBGBs
Iconic little shithole bar. I loved it
I played there right before they closed. It was pretty cool. The singer of the opening band had a latex skin on that he peeled off while screaming.
I’m lucky enough to have a story with him! Around 2002, I think, I was walking around NYC on a weekday afternoon trying to think of a topic for an oral histories project that was just assigned in one of my college classes. I was near CBGBs and thought the punk scene would be a fun subject, so I walked right in thinking maybe I would initially chat with a bartender about what the music scene is like there now but I didn’t find a bartender. I found Hilly right near the front, I told him my idea and he told me to pull up a bar stool. He talked to me for what felt like hours but was probably only 45 minutes. Tons of stories. Very hard of hearing. Super kind to a 20 year old girl with a school project. I got an A on it, by the way.
I went in 1984 , rough neighborhood
And now it’s a Newark Airport Bar/Restaurant
Though it was underground grommets. Guess not.
Went there often from 77-82. The neighborhood was sketchy back then. If I remember there was a Hell’s Angels clubhouse right near it. Visit the area now and then now. It’s a John Varvatos store now.
Was he 8ft tall?
That’s a timeless garbage can design
Who’d win in a fight between Hilly Krystal and Billy Crystal?
This ain’t no disco!
Rip
Wait how does that make CBGB thoe
Hey remember when CBGB closed because Hilly shot all the rent money up?
