As someone who has read and studied WW2 history my whole life, I feel I really acquired a deeper understanding about the real experience of the Allied European campaign and Pacific theater from the other two shows. I’m looking forward to getting a better grasp on the air war from this series.

It’s about time. This thing was in development hell for a while. Apple doing good things, again. Yes, take that iphone money and fund decent projects. Leave the cookie cutter bullshit to Disney.

    Looks great!

Austin Butler is a proper fuckin movie star man.

I know this is a series. But still. He’s got the acting chops, he’s got the look, he’s got the charisma, he’s got that indescribable X factor.

Gonna be interesting to see them market this given the controversy around Cary Fukunaga. Guessing he won’t do any press for it

Haven’t read the book – are the Tuskegee Airmen in it or is that something that was included by the writers to satisfy the industry as it currently?

If this show is even half as good as the trailer, then Apple just found it’s first all-timer in the ranks of Band of Brothers, Sopranos, etc.

    I cannot wait.

So, if you haven’t read the book, you should do so. It’s a very good book, and very worth reading.

And, I’m looking forward to seeing this. When I read the book I couldn’t figure out how it could ever be shot (there aren’t a lot of people who are aircrew in the 8th Air Force from the beginning to the end – most finish up their missions and get rotated out or get shot down). So, I can’t wait to see how they brought this to the screen.

Based on everyone involved in this, I’m very excited. I have to admit though I have some apprehension, but not sure if it’s fair based on 2 minute trailer.

The way this trailer is presented reminds me of most other popular action movies where everyone is a hero, they all are the best at what they do, and we should cheer when they win.

On the other end of the spectrum, Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan are two of my favorite pieces of WWII media. My take away from those two are that these were reluctant heroes. There was a lot of reminders that the deaths of soldiers and civilians on all sides were depressing and avoidable. There was a lot of Band of Brothers where people were waiting around for the next set of orders, just trying to make it day by day. It was a somber experience watching, and I watched it every year, but it certainly does not glorify war.

I hope it’s just the trailer that gives me this perception. I don’t recommend Band of Brothers because it’s “cool.”

I am definitely excited to watch this and i am sure it will be at least decent, but man it is wild to me how much worse this looks visually than anything on band of brothers or the pacific. I know HBO is just several steps above everyone else in general but you would think they would really go for it on something that is being pitched as another show in the same vein as BoB and The Pacific.

Some of the dialog is pretty bad in this too but it is just a trailer so that may not end up translating into the full series.

“The largest air armada in the history of mankind” is a very grandiose way to say it, considering airplanes were only about years old at the time.

I hope this show is good because the trailers aren’t getting my hopes up, this reminds me of the Midway that came out a couple of years ago.

I have an odd criticism, but I sometimes miss when TV shows looked like TV shows. They made this extremely cinematic and it takes away from some of the grounded quality of the previous two series. It’s widescreen now and has proper cinematic color grading.

Don’t get me wrong, it “looks” amazing. And the show itself could feel entirely different. It’s just the vibe I get from the trailers.

  • TheFudge

I’m always just in awe at the magnitude of the U.S. military machine in WW2. I can’t imagine the terror (or elation depending on which side you were on) of hearing a sky full of bombers flying over. I’ve been to air shows where just one was flown over and you could hear if coming LONG before you ever saw it, multiply that by hundreds it must have just been staggering.

This really looks like a nine hour film. The Pacific and BOB are incredible in their own right, BOB is practically flawless, but they are still very much tv shows. This is just stunningly cinematic on an epic scale.
