Natalie Merchant
I love her. I remember the first time I ever laid eyes in her. 10,000 maniacs we’re on SNL. I was mesmerized. I had a girl crush. I immediately went and got cassettes from the older albums and the Our time in Eden album which had just been released.
Verdi Cries
My first concert. Camper Van Beethoven opened.
Break Your Heart from Ophelia is my favorite song of hers.
Tiger Lily was the soundtrack to 1995 for me. I still have the CD.
She does Birds and Ships on Billy Braggs CD, Mermaid Avenue… I love it
San Andreas fault moves its fingers through the ground
Crazy good. The music and lyrics are hypnotic. Stone Roses and Cowboy Junkies are like that for me, but she’s on another level. Thanks for posting this.
San Andreas fault is one of my all time favorites.
Love Natalie.
10,000 Maniacs played my college cafeteria for Halloween 1982.
Their MTV unplugged album is still my favorite album of all time
I was working at Montgomery wards in the ’90s, they would randomly play a lot of her songs on the radio. She was such a favorite
Her voice hits a special place in my head. Sexy, yet soothing, calming & satisfying I can’t explain it.
Trouble me is a great song
I’m a metalhead and punk at heart, but man do I have a sweet spot for Natalie merchant.
Their MTV unplugged show for me personally is up there with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice In Chains
Love it!
What’s the matter here?
I saw her performance this album live in 1996. Incredible stage present. I don’t think I’ve seen better stage present to this day.
What is wrong with me? I’ve known Natalie Merchant and 10,000 Maniacs since the 80s, and I didn’t recognize her.
Gonna have to listen to In My Tribe now.
Probably saved my life. Was homeless in my truck and I had this Tape. One of very few I had. Listened to it all the time in mid 90s.
Many people feel the need to sing and write lyrics but every once in a while someone worth listening to does and amazing things happen. She’s amazing.
It always interests me that Aileen Wournos requested “Carnival” at her funeral. I think about that every time I hear it now. Makes it even more haunting and such a beautiful song!
The first concert I ever saw at Red Rocks.
Saw 10,000 Maniacs back in 1989/1990 – was an incredible show. The final number was Verdi Cries which I absolutely love. The show was at an outdoor amphitheater with festival seating so we had made our way up to the stage area. We were only about 10 or 15 feet away with no one in front of us as she sat on the edge of the stage and sang. It was such a beautiful rendition it nearly brought me to tears. It was a warm amazing summer night and it’s one of the best concert moments I’ve ever had.
10000 Maniacs Unplugged album was the soundtrack to my teenage years…my sister gave it to me and I listened to it on a road trip to Colorado and it has stuck with me my entire life. When I hear one of those songs, I’m instantly transported to a cramped car driving through the Rockies
Also, just glancing at this photo and not realizing who it is, I now know why I have such a Hayley Atwell crush
Tigerlily is my favorite album ever, It’s perfect to me
Natalie Merchant can control hummingbirds and certain types of frogs.
Met her in the 80s. She was touring with Camper Van Beethoven and I was working at a record store at the time. She was so modest, quiet, and smart… I fell head over heels in love with her. We sat and talked for a few minutes before a bunch of people came backstage and it became too loud, but that was all it took.
EDIT: It was the last night of their tour, Richmond VA… the Mosque.
Saw Natalie Merchant open for Bob Dylan in Lake Placid in 2004 for $35. She was wonderful. Dylan was awful.
Saw her in concert in Boulder a few years ago and her voice was so amazing. At the end of the show she said, “I have a confession. I am sick. I’ve had the flu and can only do two more songs.” I was astounded that she could give such a good performance being sick. Wonderful voice and personality.
If you haven’t seen her Tiny Desk performance from a few years back, stop what you’re doing and watch/listen now.
I’ll wait…
“In My Tribe” is one of my favorite albums.
Just thinking about the weather…
Who were the gold rush brides?
Seven years. I had just broken up from an almost seven years relationship when I heard that and it made me sob like a baby. Still gives me goosebumps
When I was like 15 – back when record stores were a thing – I went to the mall with my Mom to buy ‘In My Tribe’. When Mom and I got into the car to go home. She asked what I bought. ‘Nothing. Just a 10,000 Maniacs tape.’ She go so worked up and livid saying she did not want me listening to that ‘dangerous mosh pit music.’ I had to stop her and said it wasn’t what she thought. I just put the tape into the tape deck. She was kind of confused ‘Oh, this isn’t what I thought at all’.
From there on in, anytime we were in the car together, Mom would always request ‘Put in that band you like with that woman with the beautiful voice.’
Her Tiny Desk Concert was great!
The last tune “…I’m a poor mourning pilgrim, bound for Canaan land” gets stuck in my head, and I love it!
❤️
Am glad I read this thread
10,000 Maniacs sponsored a writing contest in which my writing club participated
These Are Days
I’m a 47 year old man and Tigerlily is still in my top 5 albums of all time. The opening to San Andreas Fault still gives me goosebumps.
Beloved Wife is one of the saddest songs ever.
