I loved their variety show that aired back in the 90s. They had an episode with Ray Stevens and I couldn’t stop laughing.
This shit slaps
Canyenorooo….yaarrrr
wow.
My hand cramped up just watching that strumming
I was always upvote this song. Love it! This has a different feel to Johnny Cash’s version.
Early Primus
Was literally talking about this song earlier today on a thread about Blues Brothers 2000
lets fucking go
It sounds like the old Irish mourning songs
This needs to be on the Yellowstone series
Love Marty Robbins version of this and especially Sons of the Pioneers version. There’s a whole guitar melody these guys aren’t playing that I miss but the vocals sound great and that fiddle player is awesome
After looking them up, only one of them is from Nashville. The rest (of the most current lineup anyway) are from northern Illinois and Michigan
And they’re still going strong!
I saw them at the Grand Ol Opry about 11 years ago. Unfortunately they just did their stuff from Toy Story like “Woody’s Round Up”.
Loved it when they did a version in Blues Brothers 2000. Love almost every version of this song but it’s pretty awesome to see the original artist.
I got to meet them after I catered their ACL show. Ranger Doug signed my Riders In The Sky shirt and I sat with them during rehearsal. They were smart, friendly and funny. During the show the tape machine had to be worked on so the Riders played ‘Surfing USA’ for the audience. It was the best version I had ever heard.
Ranger Doug, Woody Paul, & Too Slim. Love ‘em!
I prefer the Blues Brothers version
One of the few groups, and probably the most successful, to focus on the “Western” part of Country and Western Music.
Was obsessed with the guys as a kid. My parents took me too a show when I was about 7. They had a Q&A mid show and I asked “are y’all brothers?” Ranger Doug responded, “ three of us are but not to each other.” Great memories and a talented group.
Just saw them last week at the Opry, still a hell of a show
Love it, But Sons Of Pioneers version of this somg is unbeatable in my opinion.
Didn’t these guys have a short lived live action Saturday morning comedy variety show? I remember this song, some puppets and “the Gila Monster.” Maybe on CBS late 90’s?
I
That bassist really reminds me of a friend of mine from a local Arizona band called Haymarket Squares. Maybe I’ll send this to him.
If any of you redditors who don’t normally enjoy this kind of music don’t know, Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers is definitely worth a listen. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
My Dad took me to see them when I was a kid. It was a fun show. They’re great performers.
