A lot of What Ifs. Sega of Japan should have been more transparent with Sega of America that they were making the Saturn, but instead they hid it and made them develop the 32X for nothing. Sega of Japan definitely should have taken their time and instead of developing the 32X, use that money and resources to develop strong launch titles. They also could have localized more Japanese titles since it was popular in Japan. They could have also released a cheaper and revised version of the Saturn and tried to keep it afloat a bit longer with better games. And they shouldn’t have prioritized 2D gaming when 3D was becoming all the rage. Basically, Sega of Japan was the Saturn’s worst enemy.

If that had happened the recent Activision buyout that everyone won’t shut up about would never have happened.

Allow me to explain. Sonic Xtreme being cancelled ultimately lead to Sega’s downfall in the home console space. Without a flagship title the Saturn faded into obscurity and the Dreamcast was poorly timed smack dab between the console generations and failed to compete with the N64 and PS1 or the GameCube and PS2.

The Dreamcast died and from it’s ashes rose the original Xbox. The similarities between these consoles are often overlooked. They both had 4 ports, DVD roms, a memory card slot in the controller, a focus on internet capabilities, ran on the Windows kernel making them easy to homebrew and pirate, shared a similar library with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 and Jet Grind Radio, and were made in a collaboration between Sega and Microsoft. They even had the same B-A-X-Y button layout with two triggers ffs. The Xbox would of course supplant Microsoft into the gaming space, which eventually lead to these massive buyouts.

In conclusion if Sonic Xtreme wasn’t such a terrible dumpster fire of a project and released in an even remotely enjoyable state we wouldn’t see Activision get bought out. Combine that with the well known story of how Nintendo accidentally caused the Sony PlayStation, and there’s prota universe where the Mario and Sonic rivalry still goes strong.

Make the 32x more powerful and take advantage of the Genesis install base.

Make the Saturn easier to develop for and release it on its original launch day.

    Make the Saturn backwards compatible.

    So many opportunities…
