    It’s truly interesting until the first World war, I think it was Pennsylvania that was mostly German speaking. And the idea that it was American to speak English was absurd, during the gold rush you had Portuguese and Chinese and all types of people speaking other languages or a pidgin.

    I think people lose sight of how recent history actually happened, in this case less than 100 years ago. America was a wildly diverse group of people that spoke many languages and it wasn’t until a number of different factors did that start, especially the civil rights movement bolstered by white nationalism.

    But the foundation of America is basically white people from different countries violently hating one another like Irish and Italian. That nuanced partisanship has gotten lazy and now it’s just out and out intolerance and racism.
