Gramercy Riff was a band from Bakersfield, CA that was a staple in the music scene during the 2000’s. Candide or Optimism, their debut album, was a unique entry into the then-fledgling post-hardcore scene that was exploding in Bakersfield before it’s decline in the early 2010’s.
My older brother brought this album home and me, being in the 8th grade, thought that these guys were just another famous band. When I found out they were local and only just graduated high school recently, I was floored. Throughout high school, I went to near every show they put on, even catching their ‘final’ show at the infamous Jerry’s Pizza, where I have yet to see a show match the energy compacted in such a small space.
“Height of Culture” was their signature song that even local teens who weren’t part of the Bakersfield music scene were familiar with it. Hopefully you can enjoy this music as I have, and check out the EP they released before their breakup, “Music to Shake Your Baby To…”
