Judd Apatow knocked the Garry Shandling doc completely out of the park. Super stoked to see this.
What Am I Doing In New Jersey? is as relevant today as it was in 1988
It’s insane how many of his routines, even his much older stuff from his suit-wearing days, are just permanently housed in my brain. Having a friend introduce his stuff to me in 8th grade was an eye opener. Can’t wait to watch this.
YES!! I had no idea this was coming. Super excited for it. George Carlin is a legend.
This is going to take me on an emotional roller coaster.
I don’t know that he was the/an innovator in using standup comedy as a vehicle to deliver so much more than just that, whether it was sociopolitical commentary, poetry, wordplay… sometimes all of the above *in the same routine*. He might’ve been, but if not, he was one of the bonafide masters of it. I would think he is required viewing for somebody getting into standup and wanting to go back and see the legends of the business.
You can tell this was a guy that mulled over every single word of his routine… not just the message, but *how* to say it. The rhythm of the words. The flow. Which words had the impact required for the statement. Inflection, volume, tone, the body language he would use to convey ideas… etc. His Modern Man routine of course is the pinnacle of this, but you feel and hear it throughout his sets. He was unique in a lot of ways but that’s my big takeaway from his style… his wizardry with words.
May 20
I’ve been looking forward to this since its announcement and its great to have a date (May 20th) Can’t wait to watch this as George Carlin is/was a legend in the comedy world.
Greatest comic of all time. His work is timeless. I wish Spotify would bring his stuff back.
I don’t remember a lot of celebrity deaths. I was in a motel in Columbus, Ohio. Watching an Adult Swim show called “Assy McGee” when I heard about Carlin.
His 30+ year old routine being just as relevant today shows that the same old problems are still with us.
Carlin’s books are some of the funniest books I’ve ever read. I would check them out if you haven’t
Love this man! The Genisis of my Reddit user name 🙂
I was lucky to see him personally alone when driving him to a gig – great moment.
All I want is for someone to take the concept he had for his FOX sitcom and animate all of his best bits into a single 3-hour epic edutainment romp that evokes critical thinking in an impressionable audience. I can safely say that watching his 1991 “Doin’ It Again” special when it premiered has enlightened me and elevated me intellectually above my peers in 6th grade. His “soft language” bit was especially prescient and I got to see the political correctness propaganda evolve live on MTV and Nick Jr. over the following five years.
Fuck yes!!!!!! Carlin was one of the best comedians ever, I can’t wait to watch the shit out of this.
He recorded a stand-up special that he was going to call I Kinda Like It When a Lot of People Die. It was recorded on >!September 10, 2001!< so he ended up changing the name.
I miss the guy and really wish he was here to see this shitshow.
This really reminds me how HBO Max needs to add “upcoming” to their site like Netflix. I wanna add this to my watchlist but can’t find it 🙁
Oh well IMDB will do for now
hell yeah, can’t wait to see this! if anyone likes Carlin and wants to dig deeper, I highly recommend his autobiography “Last Words”, it’s very well written and it highlights the ebbs and flows of his career perfectly.
