Both of the originals were solid. I was at first going to say dead space 2 was the peak for the franchise but the last portion of the first game was so good especially when you go planetside .
The engine was very well made too, it ran like butter on hardware that came before the game.

If you think it’s surprising that a “12 year old game” “holds up” then you may not understand anything about art in general or game quality in particular.
Most gamers don’t understand artistry, they only understand technology, therefore anything *new* is inherently ‘good’ and anything old is inherently bad or expected to be bad. But this is obviously false since we know that terrible or mediocre worthless games are made today in 2023, while some excellent games were made 30 years ago.

“Literature from a thousand years ago is good?” said no one ever.
“An action movie from the 1980’s. Nah, must obviously be worse than MCU lol” – sadly someone out there has probably said this. But you get the idea, if you know about movies.

30 years ago it was just like today: some game designers knew what they were doing and did great work, and some didn’t.
Top class game. To go for a more action orientated feel compared to the original was done just as well as Aliens was to Alien. Top game.
Damn shame the 3rd just missed out on all marks, but that dlc ending was pretty good from what I remember.

Dead Space 2 was my favorite Dead Space, just super freaking fun.
I replayed 2 recently after beating the remake and it blew my mind how good 2 still looks. It makes such creative use of light especially in the Church of Unitology and the school, with lots of colorful light pouring through semi-transparent surfaces.
It’s super gorgeous and it makes me really excited for a potential remake. If it gets the same artistic treatment as the first game, it would look *incredible.*

It’s not the Game that’s holding up, it’s the studios that have stopped giving a fuck about making good games. Graphics had mostly peaked back then, there hasn’t been a lot of improvement since then. It had good gameplay and engaging story, which I can’t say for most modern games. These days they just don’t care about that, it’s all about profits, online stores, game passes and keeping a large number of people constantly playing the game so they can milk them for dumb ass cosmetics or even worse P2W gear.

I finished the Dead Space remake last week and I’m legit considering replaying the second one. If the DS1 remake was that great, I can’t wait for the second one.
FYI, this game runs butter smooth on max settings on the Steam Deck.
