This almost looks like my childhood, except its missing the smaller functional TV that sat on top of the larger broken TV.
Heck yes! Channel 3 all day baby. Also, a TV that does not have a remote control, the kids were the remote control. Yes kids, you use to have to get up to change the volume. Having a parent with no hearing from the military, you were up and down constantly changing the volume.
The 2600 had a pretty rough version of Donkey Kong… when I upgraded to the ColecoVision it’s version blew me away.
Isn’t that Donkey Kong on the screen?
I didn’t think that game was available for the original Atari console.
This could be me. We even had that same chair.
the first Mario’s appearance
I was 6 years old in 1982 but for the life of me I can’t figure out what those two walker looking pieces of furniture are in the back are….are they some kind of chairs or end tables or lamps? Lolol. They look like walkers for a really little person
brown and orange. the color palette of the early 80s. If you wanted blue, you had to get your ass outside.
Oh man, the excitement I felt for this kind of stuff!
We weren’t allowed to play Atari on the “big tv” that a lot of folks had back in the day. My father insisted video games would ruin the television. I had my Atari hooked up to a smaller TV upstairs.
Wow.
My grandparents had those bar stools! I fell off them a few times. I used to lean back and sometimes slipped on the Formica floor. They swivel and the ball bearings make a pleasing sound.
We would try to sit closer to the TV to play the games, then get yelled at because “you’re going to ruin your eyes!!!!”
I already had glasses….🤦♂️
This could be me. Fantastic picture
What’s with the fancy TV? No, two dials with the UHF and VHF, or rabbit ears?
Been there, done that. Thought it was awesome, now I know it was. Great pic.
too bad Atari got discontinued
I had memories of playing donkey kong on Atari, but then I was like, “no way could it handle that, I played ET and it was squares chasing rectangles, absolute garbage”, I thought I must have misremembered. Glad I saw this.
OMG! We had every console because my dad was a super gamer before there were gamers! Brings back memories!
Back in 1982 that boy could own his own home by playing video games. Inflation and wage stagnation sucks.
The year I was born, the child was playing Atari.🥹🥹🥹
Donkey Kong for the win
Donkey Kong
Video game museum in Texas has this setup. It’s hilarious for a photo op
Thatsa Mario!
I had this game! I loved my wood-paneled Atari.
Sadly, Atari was my peak in video game skill… all downhill from there because I can never figure out all the buttons, sticks, and toggles on the newer systems! 😕🤪
Those bar seats 😭
Love the mid century vibes!
In 2063, someone will post on this subreddit a picture of a child playing Minecraft on an iPad and the comments will be similar to the ones here.
That doesn’t look like the 2600 version of DK.
Spent a lot of quarters playing that game in an arcade.
Fuck yeah he is.
Panel. Lotsa panel.
Cable/TV switch and channel 3? ✅
Had a 2600 and still have fond memories of it. Donkey Kong wasn’t my game per se, though we did have it. Was more into Super Breakout, Adventure, Berserk, etc.
That joystick tho.
Man it was horrible
This could be me, but with Frogger instead of DK. Good times
The leftover ’70s brownness is strong here.
Can anyone else smell this picture?
I was 14 in 82.
Since the kid is playing Donkey Kong on Atari it had to be in 1983 at the earliest. Atari won the right to add DK to it’s gaming system in November of 1982.
That kid was rich if he could afford to buy a 2600 and his own house.
Lame. Yars revenge was clearly a better game.
I see your Donkey Kong, and I raise you Hard Hat Mack.👍🏼
