Thanks Les!
Chi Chi Rodriguez was a great golfer, even into his golden years. Despite his size, he was one of the biggest hitters on tour at the time and he could shape shots like few others. I watched him on TV at the Skills Challenge in 1993, I think it was the first ever. One challenge in particular which I remember was the trouble shot. The players were all behind a tree and they took turns trying for closest to the pin, each player getting three shots from around 125 yards. Chi Chi used an 8 iron and hooked his first shot around the tree to 4ft 7in, closer than the next closest by a mile. He then over hooked his second shot and decided to slice it around the tree for his third and final shot. He took a 4 iron, lined it up for about 3 seconds, and hit the ball. The ball took off left this time, went around the tree, and wound up on the green, again 4ft 7in from the hole. At 13 years of age and just getting into golf, I just thought that was the coolest shit ever, lol.
They both look super fly. Most golf clothes are ridiculous and they both look awesome. They didn’t come to mess around, they came to slay!!
Q: Are We Not Men?
If I saw these guys on the muni with those facial expressions I’d stay the hell outta their way!
That green hat is dope. I’d love to have one!
I loved the little dance he would do when he sunk the ball.
John Lynch wasn’t Rodriguez’s personal caddie that he toured with. Until 1983 when you played The Masters you were assigned a caddie who worked at the club. Only black men were allowed to be caddies at Augusta. As club co-founder Clifford Roberts once said, “As long as I’m alive, all the golfers will be white and all the caddies will be black.”
Now this is OG swag right here. Damnnnnn fellas
Those two broke par during the day.
And broke hearts at night.
Oh yeah.
Chi Chi still holds the course record at a local private country club posted on the wall from the 70’s
The caddy–John Lynch– I thought was LaKeith Stanfield at a glance. I love both of their outfits.
Bro, that caddy looks like black Luigi.
Both these guys fuck
I’ve got a game worn glove signed by chi chi,
If my grampa didn’t watch him take it off and sign it I wouldn’t believe it was his, Chi chi had very small hands and wore a woman’s glove,,,
I believe it was Devo’s first album that used the likeness of Chi Chi because a member of the band found a box of Chi Chi Rodriguez golf balls at a thrift store. It had the image of Chi Chi’s head on the box. There’s a pretty cool mini doc about it on YouTube. ⛳ 🎵
Chi Chi’s drink of choice was Absolute and cranberry juice. I got him polluted at a Nationwide tournament back in the early 90’s. Nice guy for the most part.
I have been to one golf tournament. It was when I was a kid and a “senior tour” event.
I wanted to see about an autograph and every golfer walked by the crowd upon finishing.
After the 18th hole Chi Chi stepped off to the side, sat in a golf cart and said “everyone will get a turn, but let’s the kids go first, all right?”
He sat there and signed autographs for hours.
I’m not a big golf person, but form then on Chi Chi was my favorite and when I’d play putt putt I’d emulate his sword in the sheath putter move if I made a good shot (which amused my Dad).
I never gave a thought if Chi Chi won or lost anything, I appreciated that he cared and made time for fans. Always stuck with me.
Need a biopic starting John Leguisamo and LaKeith Stanfield
True story:
Started caddying at about 13yo (’77) and caught Chi-Chi giving a clinic with trick shots. This included using a classic Ping Anser to “chip” a ball out of a sand trap (by scooping the ball with the back of the putter!) and hitting two balls lined up next to each other…hitting both one after another and drawing one while slicing the other only to make them hit each other mid-flight. Crazy.
Whenever I see Chi Chi Rodriguez now, I always think of WKRP and Les Nesman pronouncing his name “Chy Chy Rodra-gueez”.
Mario and Luigi when they’re not saving the Mushroom Kingdom
The pimpicity of this photo cannot be measured with existing technology.
Cool. I remember watching w k r p in cincinnati, Les Nessman was doing the sportscast and pronounced his name “Chai Chai RodriGUEZ,” to the utter dismay of Dr. Johnny Fever.
I just think of Les Nessman’s pronunciation of his name.
Les nessman is the only person to ever pronounce his name correctly.
TIL that Chi Chi Rodriguez was a pro golfer and not just a drag queen from To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! – Julie Newmar.
