The architecture throughout Budapest was so beautiful. The magnificence of Buda Castle and the Parliament across the river are testament to just how powerful and influential Budapest was at it’s royal height
Once one of the capitals of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hungary has seen its unfair share of political hardship and occupation since the fall of the dual monarchy after World War I
In fact Budapest is dotted with [incredible odes](https://www.worldfootprints.com/budapest-odes-to-anti-authoritarianism/) to the struggle for freedom and democracy against a sea of international forces and ideologies
Not many of us where I’m from learned about the Hungarian revolution of 1956 when Budapest erupted in protest against the USSR. Expecting help from the US and its allies Hungarian students took to the streets and we’re inspired by the moving speeches of Imre Nagy to demand open elections
Instead of support, the West did not intervene. They were tied down in an international reckoning over the Suez Canal that split the reactions of the UK, US and France instead of presenting a united front
It is unlikely that military intervention on behalf of Hungary would have ever happened, the US saw Hungary and much of central Europe as the USSR’s sphere of influence and not to be interfered with
That rebellious spirit and hope for freedom did not die. In 1989 as the Soviets fell, Imre Nagy was reburied with full honors in a public ceremony that moved the nation. Free elections were held for the first time in ages.
It has only been a generation since Hungary chose democracy. The slipping away of freedoms of the press is concerning and goes against everything that many of the monuments to Hungarian history stand for.
