That’s quite impressive work, including the bit where they tell you to pay $1.50 a minute on the phone instead. Reminds me of the monkey island hints and cheats line.

I was stuck in Faxanadu and asked my mom if I could call Nintendo hotline. She let me and glad I did call because damn the puzzle made no sense. I paid $5 and she covered the rest.

I called a gameplay counselor one time because I was stuck in NES Willow. He was no help and I never called again. Fuck that guy.

Scanning is one of my least favorite game features. In everything from Metroid Prime to Atomic Heart to Mass Effect Andromeda to Halo Infinite, I feel like you end up scanning constantly and everything just to make sure you don’t miss something. It takes away from the flow of the game. It changes how things can be hidden, and takes away from the need from good art direction to make sure key items are visible (rather than showing up on a scan).

“A letter I got from Nintendo Power 19 years ago letting me know just how screwed I was and that I’d have to start Metroid Prime over”.

    FTFY.

He’s happy to write back to a ‘fellow game player’.

I wonder what kind of letters he usually had to answer…?

When I was a kid playing Final Fantasy IV on SNES there were two mysterious items in the game booklet. One was called “Pink” and the other “Pan”. We didn’t have internet yet, so we wrote a letter to Nintendo Power and got one of these letters back. It explained Yang’s wife gives you the pan to bonk him with. And “pink” (tail) is a rare drop from an equally rare enemy found only in a specific room of the Lunar Subterrane needed to obtain the Adamant Armor. Sadly I never managed to acquire the armor.

Oh fun times. I was a game play counselor back in the early 90’s. Best high school job I ever had. We were play testing the SNES months before they came out so we’d know how to handle the new games. They got rotated around our teams so everyone had it one week at a time. Sadly I had to move away before I went to college. Still. Fun times. Still kept my guide binders and everything.

It’s wack that there are missable scans. Iirc in paper mario if you didnt scan the bosses there was like a trash can in someone’s house you could go to to grab the scan so that you can still complete things
