Such Voodoo
It’s really crazy how pervasive and distinct that image and video aesthetic was back in the 90s. Usually a blue tint, and the video is edited to mimic old film strip cuts and jarring movements, plus their was a harsh depth of field applied. This style was everywhere, commercials, music videos, even the way ads appeared in magazines. Anyone know what I’m taking about?
OOH man OPEN GL quake was a game changer
90’s tv in general is unmatched
That escalated quickly. Flatline came in with impeccable timing.
Turok 2 Seeds of Evil was an absolute banger. Way more story than the first game, but still fun and challenging.
“How long I can hold the breath of my soul for?”
It was the best of times; it was the blurst of times.
Well that was unexpected.
Hardware 3D acceleration, to the history books of gaming.
I remember when i got my first vodoo 3dfx, i couldn’t believe how smooth the rendering was.
I like commercials today where I know what their selling the whole time.
WHOPPER WHOPPER WHOPPER WHOPPER
I remember when my [Pentium II](https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-a1x7hg2jgk/images/stencil/608×608/products/3680/219353/DSCF3476__84569.1644948092.jpg?c=2) arrived and after installing it I felt like the king of the world.
The 3dfx logo with the flat-lining noise behind it seemed foretelling.
Sticking that chip into someone wouldn’t be a big deal, but the heatsink and fan it needs would be a real bitch.
3Dfx ads are something else. [This is an actual magazine ad they put out in 1999.](https://i.redd.it/7aectz6jncna1.jpg)
The mid-late 90s graphics card wars were insane.
If you weren’t upgrading your hardware more than once a year, you were SOL when it came to being able to play the latest games.
Huge take but I believe almost all modern art forms reached some sort of peak in the 1990’s
It was the perfect mix of unregulated experimentation, counter culture and pre internet thinking.
They had me in the first half, ngl
Was gonna say how ridiculous the x-ray of the head with the chip in it was, but then…
I had the 3DFX Voodoo2 SLI setup. So fast, at the time.
I saw a twitter thread about ads in the 90s getting so aesthetically crazy due to a lot of former eastern block directors suddenly being let off the leash while also losing their subsidization and taking on jobs.
Voodoo 3 3000 was actualy my first graphics chip
Dope
I am traumatized now, I saw someone act a heart attack. I was not prepared for that to happen without a warning but i also feel deeply offended that somebody acted a heart attack instead of actually having one. My life is ruined, I will use this as an excuse to do nothing and demand other people to do shit for me. The person that posted this needs to be banned from Reddit and should pay me a lot of money in reparations. I am being sarcastic you ideot.
My buddy and I both bought 3dfx Voodoo 3 3000 video cards so we could play Unreal Tournament (1999) on max settings.
Switching from Open GL on our old GPUs to Glide for the rendering engine on those 3dfx cards was mindblowing
I was instantly transported to my Quake 3 days.
Wow what a glaring display of capitalism at its finest. We could use tech to help people…buuuut we decided to use it for games/profit. Haha excellent
This is the way.
The 2040’s enter the chat in a time machine
Gotta admit, you had me in that first part
VERIDIAN DYNAMICS.
We will entertain you. To death.
Some very formative years between 3dfx and I. Really helped give me a career trajectory. Not game dev, but definitely have spent the last 20+ years hyper-focused in IT.
Best. Commercial. Ever.
>100 billion operations a second
100 gigaflops, in the late-’90s?!? No way…
