Fun thermodynamics fact: humans can’t feel temperature of something by touch, only heat flux!
A block of steel and a block of wood on a cold day outside can have the exact same temperature, but steel will feel very cold on touch, while wood will feel just mildly cold, even warm. This is because steel is very good at stealing your heat, while wood isn’t.
What you’re feeling by touching those materials is actually how fast the heat is escaping from your body! Same is true when you touch something hot, your body actually measures how fast the heat is being dumped into you.
To connect this to the comic, when you touch something very hot or very cold, your initial body reaction is HIGH HEAT FLUX MOVE AWAY, and then it needs a moment to figure out what was direction of the flux, towards you or towards the water and then you know was it cold or hot
