Why is this important? Because people are idiots. A black and white picture evokes thoughts of the turn of the 20th century – Wright brothers test flying a plane, people dancing the Charleston.
MLK and the civil right movement was much more recent.
It’s crazy to think that in the last 250 years or so of American history, the equal rights movement happened only within the last 50. “Colored” water fountains, back of the bus, not being able to get served at some restaurants…even not being able to walk on the same side of the street. MLK wasn’t starting a revolution….he sadly had to fight for just getting us to an equal level.
Showing him in color?.. why is that so important?..
I know it might make it feel more “real” to some people who don’t like any type of critical thinking, but what does the color add other than making it seem more recent?
So we can see the color of his skin?..
I’ve just literally *never* heard someone say historical pictures are somehow “more important” if in color. Like we’re incapable of seeing people in photos as people if the image doesn’t have color. Which is just stupid.
Just about everything else of importance is shown in color from that time. Nearly all journalist film had made the switch to color almost a decade preceding those events
I think it’s important to show MLK in color because it helps to humanize him and show that he was a real person with real experiences. It also helps to dispel any myths or stereotypes that may still exist about him.

Color photography existed in the 60s, but putting it in black and white tricks people into thinking it’s been longer than that. To clarify, yes it is true that colour photography was more expensive at the time, so most photographers and news papers opted for black and white. However, we CAN colorize these photos now, and they SHOULD be colorized. Both for accuracy of representation, and to combat the notion that it wasn’t within recent history
