So who took a picture of the person taking a picture of the photographer?
The photograph “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper” was taken by an unknown photographer. It is sometimes credited to Lewis Hine, but it is known he did not take this photograph. Most art scholars suspect Charles C. Ebbets. However, it is known Thomas Kelley and William Leftwich, another two well known photographers, were present on the day.
Anyway, it was a publicity stunt by RCA Building during the construction of the RCA Building. There were several other photos taken, with people pretending to sleep and play sports.
The men depicted in all of them are seasonal migrant workers, mostly from Europe, several of the men were identified and found to be Basque, Irish, Slovak, and Spanish.
People in the 1920-40 dressed so classy compared to today’s crowd.
