I loved this series. The arms race that Earth and the enemies had going was hilarious. At the end, didn’t they >!Use the ENTIRE planet of Jupiter as a bomb to blow up the middle of the galaxy?!<
Fiyah (Fiyah), Fiyah (Fiyah)! Big fan.
Its hilarious how the robot transformation was so lovingly crafted, then when they blew up the alien ship they just cut circles out of it.
This is so over the top, I love it!
It looks nice. But I would hardly call this peak animation from the 80’s. Technically there isn’t anything amazing, a lot of static shots with only translations as opposed to pose to pose.

Gurren Lagann does an exact re-enactments of handing in the shop with arms folded. I never before realized that was a reference.
Might I recommend the demon scene from the weirdly horny and terrifying 1983 film Rock and Rule, which stars Lou Reed, Debbie Harry, and Cheap Trick?

Why do their eye’s twitch?
The ending to Diebuster makes me cry every time!

This isn’t actually the final battle in the series.
The final battle is in black and white because Gainax did what Gainax does and ran out of money at the end.
gotta say, the ending of this when they return to Earth after like 10,000 years or whatever fuckin made me tear up as a young lad

Initially I was going to write that I can see where Anno got his inspiration from for Neon Genesis until I did some research and saw he was the director of this anime. That makes sense.
