Absolute legend
I read once that everyone on the show hated him.
He has a deformed hand that he hid in every scene he did. Nobody watching the show ever knew. It appears he’s still hiding it.
Oh no… 1970 to 1983! He was the ONLY cast member from the original movie to go on into the TV series. 😉 P.S. Cool trivia about the theme song for the movie and the instrumental version for the T.V. series. This dark and beautiful song titled, Suicide is Painless was written by a 14 year old. Mike Altman was the director’s then 14-year-old son.
He was 11 years old?
Gary Burghoff left MASH after the 7th season.
I didn’t watch him on MASH though. I best remember him for his Gulf / BP gas station commercials in the late 80s/90s.
He really hasn’t changed that much. He left the show in 1979.
He starred in a post-M*A*S*H pilot called “W*A*L*T*E*R” that had Radar working as a city cop after his family’s farm failed.
Interesting fact from his wikipedia page:
“He was the drummer for a band called The Relatives in 1968. Lynda Carter, later a well-known actress, was the band’s singer.”
My uncle was his neighbor in a condo in the Tampa Bay area in the 80s. One of my earliest memories as a Gen Xer is watching MASH on the little black and white television at the kitchen table. It was one of my parents favorite shows. So it was a little weird to get to meet Radar in real life. I remember he was nice but I was kind of embarrassed because I was at that age where everything embarrassed me.
Died when he was 11. So sad.
His birthday was back on the 24th.
Years ago somebody in a small town near me had homemade traffic signs warning of “Radar Ahead”. I guess there were lots of speeders on the way into town and they’d had enough. The homemade Radar signs were there for several months, but I guess some bylaw officer finally got involved and one day they were gone. A week later the guy had put up signs that warned of “Gary Burghoff Ahead,” and they lasted for a while. I love malicious compliance and that one was always good for a chuckle.
And we will all have a grape nehi to celebrate!

He look very good.
I had a teddy bear exactly like Radar’s.
I met him at an art walk back in the late 90s. He paints amazing pictures of endangered animals and adds gemstones to the eyes to make them sparkle. He was so nice and I was so young. I drove home just to get my copy of MASH on VHS. He happily signed it. One of my favorite memories.
I imagine this guy driving the jeep he sent home part-by-part.
“I have a message” One of the saddest scenes in TV history and he made it real
I know his son, an absolutely delightful man and a professional fisherman who goes by “Sonar.” (Clever, right?!) Used to host a show on the fishing network. I hear that his dad is a bit of a difficult man, but the family is great and I hope they’re having a wonderful day together.
I’ve always wanted to make a picture where he was standing by a “Speed checked by Radar” sign holding a radar gun
Grape nehi for everyone!
Ahh… Bach!
weird to celebrate the life of a random 11y.o. that died 50 years ago with pictures from “hogan’s heroes”
Happy birthday, Gary!!!!
Fuck I thought he passed away, dont do this shit to me Reddit.
The scene where he reports Col Blake being shot down still gets me. I saw it as a kid on reruns in the 90s and it still stands out to me for how great of a performance it was.
My parents and I watch M*A*S*H every evening. Such a terrific show!
Great role – couldnt imagine the serie without his character!
He looked like shit for an 11 year old. Sad
Poor dude only lived to be 11 – but looked much older
Most confusing crush on a man I’ve ever had
He’s the original Charlie Brown in You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown
Not his birthday today?
My dad worked at a Nathan’s hot dogs in a Kmart before they closed, and he would come in often. Got to meet him once, and my God, he is such a sweet man. Funny enough before that my dad used to drive for a bus company and met Alan Alda in a mall while on a trip.
As a young nerd in glasses, I felt represented and visible when he was onscreen. Thanks dude, happy born day king
His hands look completely normal here.
For being ~11 years old according to the title, dude looked old as hell and seemed pretty accomplished! Cheers!
He looks really old for an 11 year old
He lived in Paradise,CA (near me) and maybe still did when it burnt down in the Camp Fire in 2018. I dunno. Anyways, it felt like he had a cameo in every local commercial when I was growing up.
He was only 11 when he died? He looked a lot older on the show. That’s crazy.
He died at 11 years old. How sad.
Hey. Has anyone mentioned his left hand yet?? Yeah? Okay.
Fun fact.
The character of Radar was always filmed holding something, usually a clipboard, because Gary Burghoff had brachydactyly (but his character did not).
For a minute he was wilding out on Twitter and that was the funniest shit. Happy Bday man
Dude looks pretty God damn old for an 11-year-old
Just remembered when I was a lil kid that I briefly thought him and Jason Alexander were the same guy.
Coupla items I haven’t seen in the comments here yet:
* This is his 80th birthday!
* Stephen King named an important character in his latest novel, Fairy Tale, after Burghoff’s character in MASH.
Does anyone remember an episode where radar, kelly and some other members of tje 4077 started a band? I think tjey played love potion #9 what episode was this??
