Bessie Jones lived on one of the Sea Islands of Georgia and collected and retained dozens of songs frequently sung by island residents, whose style had gone unchanged for decades due to their relative isolation. Jones was often recorded by Alan Lomax, who collected all kinds of homemade music from around the entire U.S. for the Library of Congress.
