I saw JLH get off a plane when I was a teenager. I was at the airport to pick up my mom, who was coming in from Chicago. She got off the plane and said “Let’s wait, there was a famous person on the flight, but I didn’t recognize him; Maybe you will”. So we waited a few minutes, and JLH’s entire entourage of maybe 20 people walks past. I don’t recognize anybody. Then, an older man walks past in a sharp suit and a fur trilby with the BIGGEST diamond “JLH” stickpin you’ve ever seen.
“Sorry mom, I don’t know who that was”. We figured it out in the newspaper the next day. I’ve never been one to fan all over celebrities, but thirty years later, I’m still trying to learn his guitar riffs. Wish I could say I shook his hand when I had the chance. A true giant of the art.
