Witness for the Prosecution. A great thriller from 65 years ago.

I was just asked today what my favorite courtroom movie was….this was my pick!
This is an absolutely cracking film. It feels like it hasn’t aged a day, there’s not a word or scene wasted. Thoroughly recommended. Charles Laughton on top form! Its one of Billy Wilder’s best (with the help of Agatha Christie). And Marlene Dietrich … Just don’t tell the ending …
Magnificent! Laughton and Lanchester steal the show completely.
I’ve never been a fan of courtroom dramas, but there’s three that are absolutely wonderful all the way through:
Witness for the Prosecution
12 Angry Men
Anatomy of a Murder
I don’t know how many times I’ve seen these.
Probably the best courtroom drama with a great cast and director. Tyrone powers best performance. He should have been in the prime of his life at 43. He looked much older and worn and would be gone a year later.
I watch this at least weekly as a bedtime movie.
Billy Wilder made this, Some Like It Hot, and The Apartment in a span of 4 years. He’s somehow underrated in the greatest directors conversation, especially considering how many classics he wrote and directed.
I’m adding this film to my list. Thanks.
Fun fact: Richard Kind’s favorite film
This movie got me in the end. I was caught off guard. Not like in primal fear where half way I thought I hope this isn’t going where I think it is, Witness for the prosecution literally had me fooled till the end. Billy Wilder is great, and adapting Agatha Christie, it’s a must watch.
If you like Tyrone Power in this check out the original Nightmare Alley, a pet project of his.
I was terrified by someone in this movie, but then happened to admire them right until I also was able to feel bad for them eventually. Such a roll coaster!
Just finished watching it, what a ride.
Marlene Dietrich was terrific.
