The proliferation of US made Stinger Missile MANPADs had made flying across most of Middle Earth very very hazardous.
The flying monkeys would have easily intercepted their flight, buying time for the nazgul and defeating the fellowship.
We don’t read about the flying monkeys because they weren’t important to the story and are too obvious to mention.
I like his answer.
A better question is, why have eagles as part of the lore at all? I think Tolkien was just a troll.
I love him even more for being so hilarious as to set up that punchline with a whole minute of preamble
