Gods I hate the blue shell… It’s so *damned infuriating* when some shitty player gets to just totally ruin your lead for no other reason than that they suck. I don’t even like to use it when/if I get one; I just feel so guilty about it.
I liked the blue shell in n64 as it used to shoot along the whole track and could hit anyone on the way. You could dodge it too with some skill.
After that they made the shell almost unavoidable and waaaaay too common.

There are 3+ ways to stop the blue shell. And it’s fun. If you’re good enough, you’ll still win. And if not, then you didn’t deserve to!
I discovered the interaction between the horn and the blue shell for my play group (we are a casual group of players). We were amazed that the thing we constantly cursed had counterplay. Now, we all keep our horns when near the lead.

The blue shell is one of the things that makes Mario Kart a fun game for everyone even when there’s a large skill gap.
Honestly Mario Kart is one of the times I can say F skill and let pure chaos of item rolls consume me. Baby Park is such a good course for this reason.
The blue shell is actually really well designed. If you are in first place, you are not getting hit by anything. You have first dibs on item boxes and you will always get defensive items, so red shells are a non-issue. The blue shell gives players in first something to worry about besides their driving. Do I hate getting hit by it every race right before the finish line? Of course, but I’m glad it’s in the game.
Blue Shell could be better designed though, while its great that it balances the skill in a casual game, I would much prefer if it hit everyone along the way, (without fail) and then it could still keep its explosion hit for first place.
That way it at least slows down the 2 karts right behind you without giving them an easy win, while also actually benefitting the person who used it, rather than just benefitting 2nd place.

OP plays SNES Mario kart and only SNES Mario kart. Blue Shell’s been around since 64 which to this day is an amazing game. Learn to drop back into 2nd when the blue shell comes.
