Golden Axe is top-tier in the golden age of arcade gaming. Right up there with Sunset Riders, Turtles in Time, and Simpsons. Fantastic stuff
Death Adder was a tough bastard
It’s a favorite of mine too. You can cheese the game just using well timed flying kicks with Tyris
i love getting beaten up in these games
I played golden axe 2 on the mega drive collection and struggled to beat it but just about managed it with a life to spare. I used to be good at beat em ups.
Skipped a day of high-school and went to the arcade with a friend. Think I spent 5 bucks beating.
I just got a box from my parents with our mega drive 2 and a cassette containing Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and a couple others. (something bejeweled, motorcycle racing, fifa world cup ’90 and some ninja platformer)
Lots of memories…
im praying for the devs of streets of rage 4 make a new game of golden axe
‘Errrrrr Gawwwwd!’
Fairly sure the dwarfs axe is grey not gold on the mega drive. Why is it gold in this picture? Also you want the dwarf and the women to cover all your bases.
This was my dad and mines favourite game when I was growing up so many great memories.
This, alien storm and mercs was my favorite as a kid, great times.
Damn. Think I have this on my Pi 1up. I’m gonna go home and play a few hours tonight.
I have fond memories of me and my dad playing this.
Golden axe was the shit! I loved ghosts and goblins too. Similar but earlier. Them were the days…..
It’s a fun game. And the punches/kicks and sword/axe hits have satisfying and unique “heft” to them that no other game really has. It’s hard to explain if you haven’t played it.
And the sequels are all really good, too.
You beat it? Nice! I never did.
Top 5 MAME games of all time.
I played the shit out of this in the arcade.
Not to mention whacking your other player if you were frustrated enough.
Don’t forget the king of beat em ups, six player X-men arcade.
When I see a picture like this, I can’t help but smell pizza.
I can hear this picture.
Absolutely loved this game. Always got most of my quarters at the arcade.
6-Pak! I spent many summer vacation afternoons with this and Streets of Rage.
Double Dragon was my go to, they had an arcade game of it in the local gas station, and I would spend my quarter daily on the way to school. I had to leave earlier and earlier though, because by the end of the first month, I could beat the game on a quarter 🙂
So much of my childhood…
So many quarters….
Amazing stuff but if we are talking the cream of crop of arcade brawlers it is unquestionably:
* 6-player X-Men
* DnD Mysteria
* Alien vs Predator
Golden Axe was *beatable*, and within a reasonable amount of quarters! Simpsons/XMen/TMNT were all ‘within reach’ of beating when you played; a fantastic and addictive feature to them all.
The characters are based on Conan, Red Sonja and… Flint Fireforge?
Golden axe!!! Memory unlocked! 😀 Thanks!!!
Golden axe might be the only beat’em up game I played a decent portion of because of the magic and ride-able monsters.
Most beat’em up games get rather stale quickly with limited move sets and doing the same thing over and over (i.e beat some baddies, move over 10 ft, do it again)
Golden Axe and Streets of Rage 2 were my Sega faves. The Warriors for Xbox is my vote for best beat em up ever, though.
It took me a while, but thought it was hilarious when I first realized one of the early enemies death screams when you kill them is ripped right out of the movie First Blood when a young David Caruso gets stabbed in the back of the leg by Rambo.
When first ever playing the game, I was like “Damn, where have I heard that scream from before?”
Golden Axe was the very definition of the term “Arcade Game”.
