Originally their cover of the Irish folk song was recorded for the Dubliners’s album *”25 Years Celebration”*. When released as a single in the same year, this version reached number 8 in the UK Singles Chart, number 1 in the Irish Singles Chart and number 45 in the Euro Chart.
Due to this popularity, they then performed it for the first time here on The Late Late Show.
Those teeth….
I feels it in my blood
This must be up there as one of the best live performances on tv imo. Ronnie Drew is incredible but always makes me sad to see The Dubliners without Luke Kelly as this is few years after his passing. Hats of to The Pogues as well, what a collaboration of top shelf musicians all around.
Man. I feel old. The only version I remember is that if the Irish Rovers.
Hard to believe they need all 15 members, but it seems they do.
Ronnie Drew was a treasure
the juxtaposition of this and def lepards “hysteria” being released on the same day
Damn! Shane MacGowan lead singer of the Pogues downed what looked like a smoke, a pint, and a shot before his second verse. On TV 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Shane MacGowan just buckled on the stage but still nails it.
The Pogues are a treasure. “Rum, Sodomy & the Lash” and “Red Roses For Me” are incredible pieces of work.
The journey of Shane MacGowan’s teeth is extraordinary.
You know, long have the legends of people like Keith Richards or Ozzy Osbourne or Lemmy and their colossal narcotic consumption persisted, but I think they are all outdone by Shane MacGowan. It’s nothing short of a goddamn miracle that he’s still alive.
The Rum Sodomy and the Lash lp is a masterpiece.
Great post
The Pogues are forever in my top 5 of all time favorite bands.
What a brilliant performance of a great song.
Excellent!
The lead singer of the Pogues can only sing when intoxicated.
But great bands though! Really are extremely underappreciated. Such talent in both bands.
Thank you to my friend in high school who introduced me to The Pogues. Still love their cover of Honky-tonk woman. I know their name is originally longer, Pogue Mi Hon (sp?), I think. Question, does The Pogues then translate as The Kiss or The Ass? Thanks in advance
Absolutely love this clip. Shane looks good and healthy
Shane McGowan has looked and acted minutes from death for 35 years now.
It’s worth noting the Late Late show (this tv show) is the longest running chat show in the world
Some have a gap in their teeth, others have some teeth in their gap
Absolutely beautiful
I got alcohol poisoning from just watching this
I’ll never not upvote The Pogues.
I hate to say it… but I do remember it…. and I do remember the Pogues singing that son at Festival Hall in Melbourne, Australia about 1988…..
Great song, but it needs more banjo
Shane MacGowan is a goddamn treasure.
Ronnie Drew showing how his coolness transcends generations.
Shane looks surprisingly together here!
Look up more recent videos if you ever need a cautionary tale about the dangers of substance abuse.
Haha love Spider Stacy sticking his tongue out at Shane at the end
When I was a kid our father took us to see the Dubliners with the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. I can remember being pretty bored at the time.
I’ve grown to appreciate their music more as I’ve grown older but I’d kill to see any of them with the Pogues. That would have been the perfect icing on the Dad/Kid music cake
