Edit : Yes I know it probably won’t even come close to living up to expectations, but this is the Lord of the Goddamn Rings and I won’t give up on it until I finish the first season.

The way she said “Mordor” did things to me

However some REAL strong “fantastic beasts: the crimes of Grindelwald” energy coming from that title choice

I thought with the first image they released with the two trees (or what I thought were the two trees) in the background we’d get Morgoth, Ungoliant and the crazy epic stories from that era.

But if Sauron is forging the rings, this takes place long, long after, right?

Everything about this announcement and title just feels so generic to me. This feels like one of the more cynical nostalgia-driven shows that has been announced recently so I feel like they really needed to sell this first impression which they did not.

    >Working with metal artist Landon Ryan, director Klaus Obermeyer, and SFX artist Douglas Trumbull, the team used sustainably sourced redwood to carve the mold, aluminum and bronze forged at 1750 to 2100 degrees Fahrenheit for the letters, sand casts of the redwood for each letter to make sure the molten metal wouldn’t burn the wood, and slow motion filming to make it all look, and this is a technical term: pretty neat.

This intro wasn’t CGI! It’s actual metal work. Remarkable!

“One of the more interesting stories we want to tell is how Sauron finds himself in a love triangle. We’ll be asking the important questions. Why can’t he choose between the bearded dwarven maiden and the son of the House of Finwe? Was his descent into the dark side due to his fear for his family? Were the rings actually supposed to be worn on the fingers, rather than other more sensible body parts?” – Future Amazon interview

So given that this series is supposed to be taking place during the Second Age of Middle-earth, I’m guessing that its climax is going to be the War of the Last Alliance, with Elendil, Gil-galad, and Isildur fighting Sauron?

I feel like the core messages they’re sending with this teaser are:

    – They’re committed to practical FX work – more LOTR than The Hobbit. I’m sure that’s the intended signal they want to send – which isn’t to say it’s true given the realities of cost and how difficult covid’s made mounting a physical production.
    – The ‘Mordor’ pronunciation stresses that they’re going to be paying attention to the details and appealing to old-school book fans. Might make macro changes (timeline compression) go down easier.
    – Similarly, as you’d hope, the recasts are not being invited to do impressions of the movie cast. Clark sounds like Galadriel here, not Cate Blanchett.
    – The music sounds expensive. Do we know yet if it’s Shore?
    – TLOTR:TROP is a bit unwieldy as a title but makes sense. I reckon as the show establishes itself and gathers momentum the former part will be dropped or de-emphasised. At launch, it makes sense

Nine Rings for Mortal Men doomed to die!

I really hope they do this theme of Tolkien’s work justuce. The story of Al-Pharazon and the Akallabeth is one of my favorites, and deals with an age old human question of Mortality

Every fucking time. Atm were at step 7 or so

  • canireddit

How come there are no-name showrunners at the helm of this? Is this show being created by an algorithm? Why land an IP this big and then treat it like shovelware?

  • Devils-advocate69

This might be an unpopular opinion but this was such an awful title teaser.

I appreciate that it was all real life and not CGI, but my god…

Forgettable graphics, unfortunately looks like old school Skewmorphic CGI, music was forgettable, the voice over is unfortunately not imposing nor memorable and actually ruins the character of Galadriel.

I’m hoping that this title teaser has nothing to do with the actual aesthetic used for the show.
