    I don’t know the exact history behind it (probably easily googled) but I recall when I lived in Charleston that the pineapple was considered a sign of hospitality. If you travel around downtown and look closely at the beautiful old houses, many feature stone carvings or other representations of pineapples near the main entrance of the house. My theory is that, back in the day, it was probably a special treat to be able to share a fresh pineapple with a guest visiting your home, and hence a sign of hospitality and respect.
