I love NOMO! One of my long time favorites. Rather randomly discovered them when an old roommate said there was a good band playing at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, MI, where NOMO formed, and said he’d pay my cover charge if I drove. He didn’t really actually care about the music, he just wanted to drink and knew I didn’t so it was a ploy to get me to be a designated driver. Which wasn’t a problem as I was totally down to go see some live music.
If he was aware of who was playing he probably thought it was Saturday Looks Good to Me as they were the headliners. When we walked it there was a band playing who I at first thought was Saturday as well. I was hooked immediately. Saturday was good as well but I couldn’t stop thinking about NOMO.
This would have been probably almost exactly 18 years ago, sometime around May/June/July 2004. They played pretty regularly and I don’t think I missed a show of theirs in the Ann Arbor area for a few years. The core was everyone in this video minus the drummer with the dark shirt but plus another trumpet player. Then there would usually be some random people as well, trombone and I think some other horns at times and various percussion. I seem to remember them having like 14 people one time.
Eventually some of the core was no longer part of the group and they played less and the guy playing sax and keys, the leader of the group, formed Wild Belle with his sister and they had a lot more success than NOMO. I’ve seen them and they are good but I like NOMO much more.
Last time I talked to the main guy he said a new NOMO record was being worked on. But I feel that was at least 5 years ago. I feel like that is no longer happening, although maybe these shows are a good sign that it still could.
I saw that they were playing these shows and really wanted to go but wasn’t able to. Cool to be able to see a bit of one.
