That was really great. I remember [a very different version of this scene.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CGgRjgz-1U)
Always interesting to see [another actor’s performance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVxYCeRXzGo) of the same lines.
Oh it’s that time of the week?
Damn reposters.
Can’t wait to say this to my son word by word.
Harshly delivered but an important message for a child growing up in a harsh world. Great writing and an awesome performance. Thanks for sharing.
Edit: In the context of a Black child in the 1950s ya turkeys. No modern parents should act this way.
Uh, James Earl Jones and Courtney B. Vance, you mean.
And Courtney B. Vance, AKA Mr. Angela Bassett.
He won an Emmy for killing it playing Johnnie Cochran.
Shit, I think even I cried.
Phenomenal acting but without further context I most say that this is an abusive and selfish way to raise children
Why even have a kid then? I know this was the 50s, and if you didn’t have kids in a couple, you were weird. But in a situation like this, what drives the Father forward in life? Why continue? He doesn’t like his work, his kid, and its difficult to believe he still has a loving relationship with his wife, so does he wake up out of spite for the world?
[The entire scene gives some excellent context](https://genius.com/August-wilson-fences-act-i-scene-iii-annotated)
I uh. . . I think I saw this play live as a child. Maybe 5th grade. It was very rough for me. First time I really realized people didn’t grow up like me.
It was scary play and I was amazed.
Thanks for the link. forwarded it to my mom for the memories.
I’ve always been captivated by this scene. It says so much about their relationship and the father’s outlook on life. The father viewing his relationship with his son as a responsibility rather than an opportunity for joy. That he feels so strongly about the importance of duty that he takes his son’s desperate moment of vulnerability as an opportunity to teach him a lesson on duty rather than a chance to reassure his child of his value.
It’s hard not to agree with the father in a sense, that a parent’s care for a child is derived from responsibility first. That getting caught up in other’s opinions of you is a recipe for an un-satisfied life. But it is devastating to see the young man opening up, so in need of affection and then get absolutely shut down. If the Dad had given the same speech but with a caveat at the end that although he doesn’t need to like him but does anyways, you know it’d mean the world to the child.
Holy shit that made me cry like a baby. My son is due in 3 months, probably why lol.
Wow!
“I gave you your life” is a little more persuasive coming from a woman. Not that it’s all that persuasive in a situation like this, but at least from her it’s “I carried you around for 9 months and pushed you out of my vagina”. From the man it’s like “uhhh yeah I had sex once”
I loved him as King Lear
Where can you watch this whole play
Is there a subreddit dedicated to videos/recordings of plays? even if it’s just monologues/snippets.
James got those arms
