Would be interested in the infrastructure and availability of public transportation back then. The taxi industry must’ve had a major boom right after the law was enacted.

What are some things happening now that you suppose people in the future will look at the same way we look at this video?

Would the people rooting to remove Roe Vs Wade be looked at this way perhaps? The way we treat trans people perhaps? Wearing masks? I bet we still have a lot of issues today that aren’t much different. What do you think?

PS – I had no idea this didn’t become law until 1967.

In the US, “One for the road” used to be considered normal (drinking one last drink before leaving the bar). I was surprised to hear a British person talk about miles per hour instead of kilometers per hour.

This is one of the wildest videos I’ve ever seen lol

Such gleeful, innocent support for drunk driving. That “I’ve drunk drove across Africa” lady has 100% killed

  • myoilyworkaccount

Lol. The guy at 2:50. Huge Ray energy. “That’s the way it goes”. Some guys can drink an drive and some guys can’t. What is drunk?

Nice slice of pie to see the topic perspective from back then. Knowing what we know now, we can criticize the subject further than the reporter who did quite a good job. The laws regarding dui over in England-land are different than USA but we can still have takeaways. Nice post op

I know people TODAY who will tell you with a straight face that drunk driving laws impinge on their FREEDOM (to drive drunk) and so the shouldn’t be laws.

    Seriously.

  • locotoure

Fascinating! Funnily enough England still has one of the least strict drunk driving law of all countries in Europe, with a limit of 0.08% BAC.

It’s also perfectly normal to drive home after having a drink, which in many other European countries would be a no go.

“I drive no differently than I do now.”

After that Mythbusters episode, I can tell you, if that is truly the case than we should maybe look to take away your liscense then.

With how crazy all of this seems, combined with the accents and the 1960s style camerawork/film look, I have to keep telling myself that this isn’t a Monty Python sketch…

  • Manascream

“But this is the law of the land, you cannot drink and drive over the limit”
    “I see, Oh well.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯”
I think this is the old school “Oh no, Anyway”

  • Cycleguy57

Drunk driving was always illegal. It’s the introduction of specific limits and mandatory testing with the breathalyzer that was new

  • zamfire

That fella at the end said 70 MPH and not KPH, did Britain use MPH back then?

Edit: Sorry cousins from across the pond, didn’t mean to offend anyone. Learned something new today.

  • KTRouud

it’s a good reminder that every single step we take forward, there will be people desperately trying to drag us backwards.

    Humans are so easily manipulated.

  • Pisodeuorrior

Lol the nerve of the guy complaining that pedestrians don’t get tested, as if it were even remotely the same thing.

  • StopBadModerators

My dad said that it was great driving through the English countryside coming back from the pub because there are these steep hedges on either side of the narrow road, so you just bounce off the sides.

  • LookInTheCorners

Did anyone else catch the fact that they filmed this outside a “motor pub”? Does that mean it’s a pub specifically for people on the road?

  • BaconReceptacle

    >Some people get drunk on a small gin, other people take 15 pints before they get drunk

    15 pints is 20 twelve-ounce beers.
