George Lucas Interview with Charlie Rose! Very intersting talk

All of that stuff about how he wrote one giant script that he divided into three parts and “then the first part didn’t really work” so he took the ending of the third part (i.e. Return of the Jedi, with the Death Star blowing up) and “put it on the first” is all such nonesense.

That never, ever happened: George Lucas is flat-out lying to anyone listening, and does so self-consciously (in a 2008 letter to the showrunners of Lost he admits this is all make-belief) and without any real reason because he’s already sold Star Wars and effectivelly retired.

There are other bits in this interview that come off as affectations – all the talk of mythology, the talk of making “personal films” – and then there’s obviously the White Slavers comment.

I probably like more of George Lucas’ films than most do, but all this lying and revisionist history is really hurting his legacy. And its not just his public persona: how can a man who thinks so little of his listeners’ intelligence as to think they’d believe such nonesense, not also think too little of his viewers’ intelligence when he makes a film?
