I think this will be a pivotal moment in Ana de Armas’s career so I hope it works out for her but this trailer wasn’t very good. The dialogue is way too on the nose. The teaser was a lot better. But it will certainly *look* good.

she looks a lot like her but the accent is… rough to say the least. i genuinely think her accent will make this hard to sit through. it seems like they cast her solely based on looks and didn’t even stop to think if she could actually act or sound like marilyn… or even just american.

  • the_watcher_13

The accent is kinda weird. She did a better American accent in Gray man tbh. But I’m looking forward to this.

Looks good but I’d be lying if I said her accent doesn’t seem like a potential distraction. I assumed it would be mostly gone.

Very much looking forward to this one. Going to be a ride. Surprised they’ve not given it a limited release. Surely it needs one for Oscar acceptance.

People are going to get hung up on the accent but I still think this is going to be pretty good. I’m excited for it.

It’s basically impossible for a native Spanish speaker to completely get rid of their accent when speaking English and you can definitely hear it here.

As someone who loves movies like Jackie and Spencer, I’m really not sure how I feel about this one. Marilyn had a painful life, for sure, but it feels like this is trading one kind of exploitative iconography for another by wallowing in her misery. Something like Spencer could get a bit over the top, but Diana had to deal with dismissive indifference from the Royal Family – whereas in Blonde (the book and the leaked script), the world seems out to psychologically torture Marilyn more or less out of sadism.

Yeah she really hasn’t nailed the voice/accent at all. I think that kind of thing is less important in a “surreal” biopic like this but I’m not gonna excuse it entirely either just because it’s an “artsy” movie.

I’m still confused as to why a Twitter user had this trailer up for a day before Netflix got around to it. Looks great, though.

As much as I know she worked really hard to dissolve her accent and develop one that sounds just enough like Marilyn’s, it’s still there. And, from this trailer, sounds really weird. I hope it doesn’t take me completely out of the movie because I’m excited to watch. It looks great.

This look very interesting. The stuff I have heard about this movie sounds like it’s a very harsh and tough watch.

  • Zimmy68

I wish I could have bet the “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” will play in the trailer.

Just started watching and what do you know?

  • StomachIcy7116

The dialogue bugs me more than the accent, seems like a lot of on the nose pop psychology stuff. That said I trust Dominik to be more interesting than I’m getting from this.

As a fan of Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, I don’t care if Monroe spoke like a Pikey in a Guy Ritchie movie, I’m tuning in to watch anything from Andrew Dominik. This film looks absolutely haunting.

Ana looks great in the role. I’m not sure how to feel about her accent. I feel like it’s almost coming in and out? But I think I’ll get used to it in the film.

If you can watch Sean Connery as Russian sub commander with a thick Scottish accent and all of the Russian engineers at Chernobyl with British accents, this won’t be a stretch!

  • SoTiredThisYear

Why can’t we just let the woman rest? Between the obsession with Marilyn and Princess D I don’t know which one is worse. Just let them be. We don’t need 1000 biopics, movies, documentaries.

I will probably watch it because I will be curious (hence my hypocrisy), but I just wonder, why can’t we just move on from them? They will be remembered anyways.

  • Nazoragoth

Nothing like mining the trauma of a woman who was destroyed by exploitation by making a fantasy movie imagining more exploitation in her memory. Gross

  • ImaginaryNemesis

Her accent is as bad as Alan Rickman’s German accent in Die Hard, and Sean Connery’s Russian accent in Red October.

By which I mean I don’t think it’ll make any difference at all. Her performance looks incredible and I’m sad for anyone who won’t be able to get past her accent to see it.

Not a fan yet honestly. Yes it’s gorgeous and so is she. Recreations are flawless. And peppered with some pseudo philosophical dialogues that you’d expect from a beginner video essayist (like me lol). It’s coming across as another voyeuristic medium trying to capitalise on a dead star’s vulnerability and making a wishy washy cynical point of everyone being mean to her.

I hope the movie proves me wrong.

  • FrenchMaisNon

Am I the only one who’s fed up with people drawing a wide white line on the nose to make it look narrow? It’s either a drag queen look or a selfie trick… Otherwise, irl, it looks like paint.

  • kidcannabis69

The bitching about the accent is crazy. We’ve seen white actors give Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, all kinds of people British accents for decades and no one cares. Not to mention that most Hispanic characters have a cartoonish Mexican accent regardless of what Latin country they’re supposedly from which is not too different than if I played a London businessman and sounded like Groundskeeper Willie

So Ana de Armas can’t fully capture an American coastal Western accent. If inaccurate accents are too much for you then you must not watch too many movies

  • chubby_pancakes

I know this likely won’t go over well…

But I thought everyone had a hair up their ass about how you can’t cast somebody across ethnic/sexual identity lines. But it’s cool for someone who didn’t speak English until 5-6 years ago to play Marilyn Monroe.

I don’t care about Ana being cast, she’s delightful. But come on people Scarlet Johansen can play a transwoman without hurting anyone
